OUT OF THE BOX THEATRE COMPANY

Out of the Box Theatre Company (OotB) was founded by artistic director Scott Robinson in 2006. His original idea was for a production of Moliere’s play The Miser underscored with the music of Mozart and utilizing theatre professionals mostly over the age of 50 in age-blind casting. Since 2007, Out of the Box Theatre Company ha

s done one or two productions a year, including comedies, dramas, and staged readings. We have expanded our range with plays of increasingly serious subject matter and brought in name directors. Out of the Box Theatre Company’s mission is to feature working theater professionals at their peak and in their prime: seasoned actors, directors, and designers primarily past 50 years of age, providing opportunity and freedom to work outside the restrictions of age, race, s*x, and disability; to present new interpretations of period plays and contemporary classics, mainly works over 50 years old; and, when appropriate, to incorporate live music performances to enhance the mood and as between-scenes entertainment. An important part of the mission is to provide live theater to the growing low-income and disabled population who might not attend theater otherwise by donating at least 25% of the tickets to low-income senior citizens. Since 2018, OotB has performed at the Bernie Wohl Center at Goddard Riverside Community Center. Prior to that we spent five years at the West End Theatre, preceded by several seasons at the Hudson Theatre Guild and the Bank Street Theatre. OotB founder Scott Robinson was diagnosed with cancer in December 2010 and died April 24, 2011. We lovingly dedicate all performances to his memory and thank our audiences and supporters for helping us keep Scott’s vision alive.

Join Out of the Box Theatre Company for JAZZ 'N JOKES IN JUNE, a matinee of marvelous music and madcap merriment!

This one-time-only concert stars the world-renowned, Grammy-nominated musician Nat Adderley Jr. and the Nat Adderley Jr. Trio. The trio will fill our space with the jazzy sounds that have thrilled audiences of their many recordings and in concert halls from coast to coast.

And since “laughter is the best medicine,” three hilarious stand-up comics will kick off the performance and warm us up for the musical magic to follow!

You know we love delivering high-quality, vibrant theater. But this year, the challenging funding landscape, including cuts and rescissions of arts grants, threw us a curveball. As a result, we had to scale back our productions.

Instead of mounting our usual repertoire of one to three full shows annually, we had to pivot, focusing on financially smart formats like lean, powerful concert stagings (we hope you saw our October production of Animal Farm!). We're hustling to continue offering crucial live theater, with the hope of expanding our season if funding allows.

Out of the Box's production of The Butter and Egg Man made TheaterScene's Top 10 Shows of 2024! This is the third time OotB has been acknowledged this way by Darryl Reilly.

An adaptation of a horror novel, a majestic performance by Len Cariou and a powerful play in Spanish, were highlights of the New York stage this year.
