spit&vigor

spit&vigor Theater of blood, sweat, tears, spit & vigor. We believe in theater as a vital artform that should be able to support its members.

We believe that actors are full collaborators and artists, and we aim to give a platform for actors to realize their full creative potential. It is a priority for us to compensate artists with whatever meager means we have available, and to use the full potential and talents each person working on projects within our company is willing and able to contribute. Creative, courageous work performed wi

th heart is our main mission. Our work exemplifies total theatre, a life that informs art and art that deeply informs our lives. We strive to infuse our work with all of our joy, all our sorrow, every last ounce of empathy and all of our strength, every weakness and flaw, every terror and with all our exuberance; our mission is to perform work that involves blood, sweat, tears, spit & vigor.

Allow me to be a little prideful of our space and our current (and hopefully returning) residents. We've been very blessed with the productions and small companies that have come to and Medusa Collective NYC embodies exactly the unique experience we hope our space can provide - weird and intimate and terrifying. The writing is so poetic and beautiful it made me choke up a bit within the first monologue, the performances are gorgeous and sensual and heartfelt, and the direction is perfect for the space and for the piece. I laughed I cried I possibly drank epoxy resin. Many audience members stayed long after the show to chat with performers and the artistic team, like a little mini salon or 18th century coffee shop or Caffe Cino in the 1960s; the exchange of ideas that good art inspires. We talked about mothers, life and death, about permanence, preservation, about the delights and dangers of traveling carnival workers. The more you attempt to carefully preserve in life, the more that living it slips through your fingers. That's a core tenet of theater itself and our space as well.
Here on the first true snow in NYC, find yourself on the chaotic MacDougal Street, find a black wooden door nestled between two historic theaters, climb two flights in narrow deep red stairwells like you're climbing back into the womb except this time there are performers and audience members and staff passing you to head up or back down to the noisy street or to the other theaters and spaces in the building - I love the constant movement in the halls at the Players Theater at night - find the golden ram's skull, perch on the bench outside for a minute to yap or grab a glass of epoxy resin (lol) and nestle in with the rest of the audience for a truly mesmerizing and intimate performance.
's Epoxy Resin Nightmare closes tonight, and there are still tickets left for the 9pm performance.
