The "Salle 1900" (1900 Room) inside the historic La Fermette Marbeuf restaurant located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, France.
History and Rediscovery

• Origins: Built between 1898 and 1900, the winter garden-inspired dining room originally belonged to the Hotel Langham. It was designed by architect Émile Hurtré alongside ceramic artist Jules Wielhorski to capture the height of Belle Époque splendor.

• The Disappearance: When Art Nouveau fell out of favor around the onset of World War II, the room's intricate glass canopy, floral tiles, and painted panels were plastered over and completely forgotten.

• The Accidental Find: In 1978, workers accidentally breached a false wall during renovations and rediscovered the flawless, intact masterpiece hidden behind it. By 1983, the room was officially registered as a French Monument Historique (Historical Monument).

Current Status

While the original La Fermette Marbeuf gourmet restaurant has permanently closed, the stunning historical dining room remains completely preserved. Today, it functions as the vibrant home of the upscale steakhouse Beefbar Paris, allowing guests to still dine under its famous century-old green glass roof

The 1853 Nunns & Clark Jeweled Piano

Crafted in New York for the 1853 Crystal Palace Exhibition, this lavish square piano features an extravagantly carved rosewood case. Its most striking detail is the keyboard, where the natural keys are covered in mother-of-pearl and the accidentals are veneered in tortoiseshell with intricate abalone inlay. A true masterpiece of mid-19th-century luxury and American craftsmanship.

Have you ever seen a keyboard made with materials like this before?

Have you ever seen a staircase quite like this?🤩

The cantilever, or ‘geometrical’, staircase in No. 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields is one of the Museum’s most striking architectural features, appearing almost to float!

As you’d expect from Soane, skylights, strategically placed windows and mirrors maximise natural light throughout the space, meaning the atmosphere shifts as you climb — until you reach the top, where the staircase is bathed in daylight🌞🪞

The walls, painted to imitate giallo antico marble, evoke the grandeur of imperial Rome and reflect Soane’s enduring fascination with classical architecture. Owing to the unusual shape of the building, the staircase broadens along the northern wall creating an asymmetrical plan - a detail only apparent when viewed from above.

Take a look on your next visit!

In 1898, Victor Horta finished the Hôtel van Eetvelde in Brussels, Belgium. The heart of this Art Nouveau home is a bright stained-glass ceiling supported by a thin steel frame. Because the metal structures curve to look like plants, the natural sunlight creates beautiful shapes across the room. This project shows how heavy construction materials can be transformed into delicate art.

This striking vintage furniture set reflects the elegance of early 20th-century Art Deco design, combining rich polished wood with deep upholstered seating. The curved arms, bold geometric details, fluted woodwork, and symmetrical ornamentation give the pieces a distinctive sense of sophistication. The warm wood tones contrast beautifully with the dark fabric, creating a luxurious yet inviting appearance. Furniture from this period was designed to be both functional and artistic, turning everyday living spaces into carefully styled interiors. Every detail, from the sculpted chair backs to the decorative sofa arms, demonstrates the craftsmanship and design confidence of the era.
