We’re still feeling uplifted and blessed from an unforgettable experience creating music alongside Herlin Riley, John Patitucci, Joey Calderazzo, Wynton Marsalis, Todd Whitelock

The past few days in the studio were very special, filled with love, joy, and pure creative energy.
The energy, swing, grooves, improvisation and musical decisions were infused with that spirit.
We are extremely excited to share this elevated feeling with you all through the creation of this album.

🚨🇮🇹 We will be in Milan, Italy on Jan 11 - 13 at the Conservatorio Musica Verdi Milano. I will be performing 1 masterclass each day, Jan 11 - Improvising / Being in the moment. Jan 12 - Focusing on the nuances of playing in a section. Jan 13 - Improving technique to help become more musical. Behind the scenes🚨.. When writing this piece, I wanted this solo section of the composition to represent the rapid blossoming/blooming part of Efflorescence. I used mainly augmented and flat 9 chords over various bass notes that created this circle like, continuous tension mounting sequence. Regular precomposed language does not work over these obscure poly chords! which is a good thing, as it helps to bring out melodies that you’ve never played before.

Some thoughts about playing over fast tunes when the sonic environment is challenging.
In the JLCO we don’t use monitors or a bass amp. It definitely enables us to play with more dynamics, but also presents sonic challenges, especially for us out on the wing (furthest away from the rhythm section). Some venues stage sound can feel wonderful and others can be hard to hear the person sitting right next to you! As the tempo rises the clarity of the beat diminishes, this becomes exacerbated with backgrounds, as they can create a wall of sound between you and the time. Playing super on top of the beat to combat latency due to distance can work, but sometimes can feel uncomfortable to you, playing naturally can sound to the audience like you’re behind, playing behind can feel like you’re off. Trusting ones own time while being willing to bend with the environment can help to not sacrifice your musical decisions just to ‘make’ the tempo, but sometimes it can be a battle out there!
