Saturday was a great day. Thanks to everyone who joined us to mark 2 years since the magic of 36.5 / New York Estuary happened. We lost track of clock time and lived on tidal time for 12+ hours, mostly hanging out, sharing ideas and stories. We did a collective hour-long stand mid-day and a few smaller stands in the dark. Some friends (who are highly aware of water quality in the city!) swam in the Cove! Chris danced for us to close out the evening just after midnight, and we toasted our year.

Sending love and gratitude to everyone who has been part of 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea, since 2013. Your presence is always felt and so meaningful.

Score for 36.5 on September 14:

Welcome.
Today is the one year anniversary of 36.5 / New York Estuary happening here.

Take a moment to orient yourself to the Cove.

Walk into the water.
Keep your clothes on.
Face the sea.
Stay still.
Stay silent.
Stay long enough to feel water shift on your body —
and then stay a little bit longer.

Listen.
With all your senses.
Consider what happened on this site in the ancient past? What will happen in the future?
Take it all in. Let it all go.

Document something of this experience in image and/or text.

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 36.5 / NEW YORK ESTUARY
September 14th, 2023

Join me at the Cove (31-10 Vernon Blvd) this Thursday, September 14th, to mark one year from 36.5 / New York Estuary and the completion of 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea. Here’s what’s going on:

11:07am - 12:17pm EST: I’ll be doing a 1 hour and 10 minute mini-stand as the water recedes, since this was the timing when we were all standing together around the world (Netherlands, Bangladesh, Brazil, Kenya, Aotearoa-New Zealand and, of course, NYC)

7:06 - 8:06pm EST: I’ll do another hour-long mini-stand as the water rises, since this was the final hour of the performance series...

In between the two mini-stands, I’ll be holding space at the Cove with all who are able to stop by.

Wherever you are in the world, you are invited to join me by standing in your local water on Thursday, September 14. If you can do this in sync with the above times, great! If you can do another point in time, that’s fine too! Send me a DM or an email ([email protected]) if you’d like some simple instructions on how to participate this way..

Hope to see you Thursday!

The Long Now Foundation was one of 36.5’s first partners, for 36.5 / San Francisco Bay, in 2014. I reached out to them coldly about four weeks before the performance was set to take place (August 15, 2014 - exactly one year after the first performance in Maine) and was amazed that they wrote back and were interested. Danielle, Mikl, Andrew, and the rest of the staff were so helpful. Their enthusiasm gave me confidence to reach out to potential partners further afield and long-term thinking became one of my favorite ways of framing the project.

So it was an honor to be invited to give one of the Long Now Member Ignite Talks in early July this year alongside many other fabulous speakers. The format is quick: exactly 5 minutes, slides advance automatically, one take.

10 years ago today…
August 15, 2013
11:04 am - 11:52 pm

36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea began in Bass Harbor, Maine, thanks to the support of , , and everyone else who was present that week. This first work was relatively spontaneous -- only 3 days of preparation instead of 3 years -- but in this moment, everything changed.

The first photo here was taken at 6:53pm, as I finished up the 7th hour of the performance and the water was receding. The cold had started to really set it. It was around this time that those currents and the moon made me understand just how connected we all are through the water, and I promised myself that if I made it through this 12 hour, 48 minute performance with the water, I would have to find a way to turn it into a series to be created with people around the world.

This project has grown in ways I could have never predicted and I’m so grateful for the myriad of friendships, stories, and opportunities found and created through this work. And the work continues in alternate forms! Here’s to another 10 years of deepening our relationships with water and each other...

[Enjoy these behind-the-scenes photos of the site from 10 years ago plus a final one of standing in the Oslo Fjord today with my dear aunt and uncle. Thank you, Nora and Øivind!]

I am grateful to have been invited to Tianjin, China for the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions to share 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea, connect with world leaders, and advocate for art to be in conversation with policy makers.

I had the pleasure of being introduced by friend and advisor Henk Ovink, Special Envoy to the Kingdom of the Netherlands for Water, and being in conversation with Dr. Fang Li, leader of the China Offices of the World Resources Institute while giving a talk on the history of 36.5 and the urgency of acting now to prevent catastrophic sea level rise. I also had the opportunity to display the durational video work over a Nature and Climate Dinner where world leaders and participants watched the water rise throughout the evening.

While meeting in settings like the World Economic Forum can be tricky spaces to navigate, I believe it is always valuable to bring 36.5 into the room and connect with a powerful network of decision makers. I am thankful that the Forum recognizes the importance of art in this context, to be in conversation with a variety of voices, and to elevate artistic practice. I look forward to more dialogues between art and environmental policy in the future.

These might be the most epic photos in the 36.5 series now.

Photographer captured two different 30-second slices of time during the 9th and final performance in the series, 36.5 / New York Estuary.

We’ve collaborated on a limited edition of platinum/palladium prints (DM for more info) and they are showing for the first time, starting tonight in Brooklyn.
