Growing up in America, I've always had trouble embracing my Chinese heritage. It was always something displayed in manner of convenience. Something that was only shown when at the butt of a joke or when it benefitted me.
Visiting my dad's hometown village in Zhongshan where he grew up and met my mom and learning about the history they had there was one of the most humbling experiences in my life. Over two hundred years of my family's history lay there and as I was paying my respects through the trip it filled me with such a sense of pride that I never knew I had. It gave me a huge appreciation for what my parents and family have done here in America. Hopefully I can continue the tradition and accomplish great things as well.
