Lots of creativity in Astoria tonight:
- stopped by a writing workshop at The Astoria Bookshop lead by "No, You Tell It" creator Kelly Jean Fitzsimmons to plug Greater Astoria Historical Society (a creative partner this year)
- followed by Poets of Queens @ QED Astoria (with Kambri Crews captaining this neighborhood ship)!

Happy National Poetry Month!

Watching (& have seen him live at MSG)! What a singer-songwriter-musian. When I was little, my high-school aged baby sitter listened to Billy Joel, & I was hooked.

“When I see birches bend to left and right / Across the lines of straighter darker trees, / I like to think some boy’s been swinging them.” On April 7, 1955, Robert Frost delivered a poetry reading at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

When an instrumentalist in the octet supporting The Astoria Choir, in which I'm singing this past year & rehearsing tonight for Saturday's concert, is someone I've not seen in many years, & with whose husband I sang in the Jazz world! (Looking at you, Gili Sharett & Rafi Malkiel!) 🎶

9/11 Again
It was a clear blue sky.
It is again.
This apartment --
I live here still.
I was married.
I'm not now.
I was late for work.
I still am.
That office --
I'm in the same building.
The elevated train line into Manhattan. Its letters have changed & back again.
I still take it.
Commuters, workers… despite the flames and black plumes in the distance, still tried
to get where they were going.
New Yorkers are like that.
The internet was a blessing.
Now it's a curse.
No one understood.
We still don't.
I went to the same corner bodega each morning in the days after for the New York Times, and wondered how the Arabic-speaking owners and deliverers would fare in the coming aftermath.
Those men are still there.
The newspapers in a bag I've not touched since.
Brokaw/Jennings/Rather guided us through.
I miss them.
The friend who showed up on our doorstep for consolation --
We've lost touch.
The smoke finally cleared.
Effects linger, and poison.
The view from my same roof --
Forever altered.
It was 20 years ago.
Just yesterday

🎵 The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here in Camelot! 🎶

My candle burns at both ends...

A Southern belle who grew up with religious, classical and pop music, discovered musical theater and French song in Paris, then N.Y.C. where Jazz and cabaret took over... Awfully fond of the key of Gb, and has been fortunate to gig with some of the best rhythm sections out there. As well, a published poet, who has featured abroad and around town. Her book of original poetry, “Document,” came out in 2018 with NoNet Press.
