Someone Is Sending a Message is based on a true story of persistence and hope in the face of adversity--a story that revolves around a courageous young man named Nick Springer. It’s also the story of a painter named Sheila, a friend of Nick who is at a crossroads in her art and in her life.

The past few months have been an extraordinary time for Cause
Celebre. The following three plays were written by Susan Charlotte, directed by Antony Marsellis, were based on the case of Martin
Garbus and featured award-winning actors.

We started with a Gala on April 21st, paying tribute to legendary lawyer Martin Garbus, iconic folksinger Judy Collins, and Former Deputy Chief NYPD's Special Victims Unit Mike Osgood. This included another performance of "Unlucky Gal/The Story of Jane Doe, The show was followed by Judy Collins singing. It doesn't get better than that!

On June 14th, we presented "The Last Chance Cafe/First Time Voting." This play is based on a case of Martin Garbus' that combines a drama about voter suppression and includes lyrics from musical icon, Bob Dylan. The show ended with a talk back with Mr. Garbus, best-selling author, journalist, and social commentator Ellis Cose, the cast, and the author, Susan Charlotte. This was part of
the Juneteenth celebration.

Finally, "The People Versus Lenny Bruce" was presented in LA at the Garry Marshall Theatre for three successful performances! There were no judges and no jury at Lenny Bruce's trial. On July 21st & 22nd the audience was both the judge and the jury! Clearly they responded to the show--each performance received a standing
ovation.

Exciting News! WBAI is broadcasting a new play called “Unlucky Gal/The Jane Doe Story” based on one of the cases represented by Martin Garbus. Written by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis, the show airs on Saturday, June 24th, at 8 pm.

Don’t miss this extraordinary story performed by a stellar cast that includes: Zach Grenier, Nesha Ward, Larry Pine, Kit Flannagan, Henry Clark, and Michael Citriniti.

“I’ve had the misfortune of being r***d twice, once in the park and once by the press.” These were the words of Jane Doe, a 27-year-old gay black woman who was r***d in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, in April 1994.

Mike McAlary of the Daily News wrote three articles saying Jane Doe lied though the NYPD had evidence to the contrary. She sued McAlary and the Daily News and lost. Twenty-four years later, Michael Osgood, Deputy Chief of the NYPD/Special Victims Unit, reopened the case. McClary’s story was told by Nora Ephron in 2013.

It’s time to tell Jane Doe’s story- tune in!

WBAI will also have a special broadcast of the play tonight, Wednesday, June 21, at 12:00 AM EDT.

“Something Unspoken” is a humorous one-act revolving around the social maneuvers and secrets of a Southern Spinster. “The Hairdresser” is set in a hair salon and explores compelling issues such as mortality, again and loss, with much deeper secrets revealed as the emotionally charged interchange progresses.

This play is part of a project that began in 2012 called the “Rosa's Registration Ride” in honor of Rosa Parks.

The RRR first presents the play and then offers audience members a chance to vote on site. The RRR has traveled throughout the country—from Megan, Georgia to Washington D.C. to New York City, where we provided a bus to take the audience to see the play.

The results of the RRR speak volumes:
In September 2019, 200 students from the Democracy Prep registered over 100 people to vote.
