"From the 18th century onwards, dramatic numbers of Irish citizens emigrated to the U.S., often to escape religious persecution and economic hardship. They left the comfort and support of family, friends, and loved ones to arrive in an America that often regarded the Irish as incompatible with American ideals. We will take a fascinating multimedia look at the history and culture of the Irish of New York from their immigrant beginnings to the present day. Their journey of hope is reflected in the shared experiences of immigrants from around the world coming to America."

'As part of The American Irish Historical Society's Irish-America 250 Program, they will celebrate the legacy of Princess Grace Kelly in a new exhibit, “Grace Kelly: Drumilra’s Irish-American Princess.

"This exhibit commemorates the visit Princess Grace Kelly took back to her family’s ancestral home on June 10th, 1961. The launch will feature remarks by Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason on her relationship to Monaco and viewings of the exhibit led by our Curator. Guests are encouraged to emulate Kelly in their fashion and embrace Irish royalty.” '

"It's shaping up to be a beautiful weekend for the 13th annual Rockaway Beach/Breezy Point Irish Festival, especially to help out St. Camillus Church, and everyone is welcome.

On Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., head to the St. Camillus lot at Beach 100th and Shore Front Parkway, as the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21 has a weekend full of good craic in store. Roberto 'Pico' Lopes, an Irish-born center back and captain of Dublin club Shamrock Rovers, was a late arrival to international soccer.

Lopes, now 33, had made a solitary appearance for the Irish under-19s and appeared unlikely to make the breakthrough for Ireland’s senior team when he received a message in Portuguese on LinkedIn from then-Cape Verde manager Rui Águas around seven years ago."

The article by Shane O'Brien goes on to say, "' Lopes, meanwhile, thanked Doran and Honey Fitz for the gesture and paid tribute to the Irish back home for the support they have shown him in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

'The support from Irish people at home has been incredible, so it’s great that the support is spreading,” Lopes said in a statement.

Cape Verde kicks off its World Cup campaign against reigning European champions Spain at 12 noon on June 15."

According to NME "Shane McGowan's Pub will be located at 250 West 14th St, between 7th and 8th Avenue, in the West Village, on a site that used to be home to McKenna’s pub.

“This will be a living tribute to a true icon,” a statement has said. “We are incredibly honoured to be opening this space with the blessing of Shane’s family, bringing his raw, poetic Irish punk spirit to the West Village.”

The Gothamist has shared "A local's guide to the World Cup in New York"
