Make Music New York

Make Music New York Celebrate NYC's free, outdoor music festival by the people, for the people. Winter Festival 12/21 ❄️ Some 5,000 musicians performed in 2015.

Now in its eleventh year, Make Music New York, “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), is a unique festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City, all on June 21st, the first day of summer. MMNY takes place simultaneously with similar festivities in more than 700 cities around the world — a global celebration of music making. Compl

etely different from a typical music festival, Make Music New York is open to anyone who wants to take part. From 10 in the morning to 10 at night, every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, sidewalks, parks, and plazas to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. Thousands of amateur musicians take the opportunity to play in public spaces, often for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional musicians perform for new audiences, who come out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free. And everyone is invited to sing along and enjoy the first day of summer. Among the over 1,200 concerts each year, MMNY includes a number of special projects: “Mass Appeal,” where hundreds of musicians band together to perform massive pieces written for a single type of instrument; “Punk Island“; and others listed here. Along with concerts by individual artists, dozens of New York cultural institutions took part — including Carnegie Hall, Friends of the High Line, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, SummerStage, and more.

As we prepare for the 20th Make Music New York summer solstice festival, we're enjoying looking back at highlights from the past years. The first Make Music New York took place in 2007 with 560 performances around NYC including Tuvan throat singers outside the Rubin Museum of Art, dozens of indie bands blanketing Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, the NYPD jazz band at Coney Island, In C on Cornelia Street in the West Village, and music makers coming together to celebrate in all five boroughs.

As we like to brag, Make Music New York presents the city’s only music festivals that are both for and by the people. Put simply, you are at the very center of our mission, our cause and our effect, and we could not Make Music without you! This , as you consider the many worthy organizations relying on your financial support this year, we appreciate you considering a fully tax-deductible donation to Make Music New York.

As a small 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization, any financial gift that you are able to make, no matter how modest, will go directly to fulfilling our mission and will directly support our 15th Annual Make Music Winter festival taking place on the winter solstice, Sunday, December 21. This year's festival has paraticipatory events around NYC to keep you warm regardless of the temperature. Your donation also goes to support our annual Make Music New York festival, celebrating 20 years on Sunday, June 21, 2026!

We find inspiration in our participants and we hope your participation inspires you to provide New Yorkers with unique opportunities to perform and experience free, innovative and immersive music performances from shared outdoor spaces in the very neighborhoods in which we live and work. Thank you for all that you do to share this gift year round and especially for thinking of us as part of your end of year giving.

Wishing you a Happy Holiday season and we look forward to Making Music together!

Warm up your voices to sing along with us at this year's Make Music NY Winter! We're excited to have two of our popular choral activities return.
🎶 Pilgrimage - Led by conductor James John, artistic director of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, singers will walk an Upper West Side route to sing medieval melodies once sung on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
🏙Mobile Hallelujah - Conductor Douglas Anderson and producer Melissa Gerstein again team up to lead “Mobile Hallelujah,” bringing the oldest continuously performed piece of Classical music to the streets of NYC. Participating singers will gather at six popular midtown locations to sing the famously uplifting “Hallelujah Chorus” from George Fredric Handel’s Messiah, surprising passersby with seemingly spontaneous outbursts of the most famous choral piece in history.

Registration info for both events is available on our website and the link in our bio.

🔔Join us to (literally) ring in the winter season! 🎄

“Bell by Bell” is a fun Make Music Winter tradition designed to transform anyone into Music Makers. This is the perfect program for kids and families!

Meet us at Astor Place Plaza, at the cube sculpture, where we will distribute to revelers color-coded bells that play different notes and give an introductory crash course in hand bell playing basics. Then, our team of conductors will wave matching color-coded flags, prompting you and your fellow participants to collectively contribute to commissioned hand bell compositions that intensify as the group learns to play together. Reserve your hand bell spot in this popular program below.

We are thrilled to partner again with The Village Alliance, the neighborhood’s Business Improvement District, to present Bell by Bell. The Village Alliance works for the people and places of the Village to support community and business vitality.
