Saturday, June 3, 1775. 250 years ago today in Williamsburg, Virginia, a small group of young Patriots attempted to enter the public magazine and make off with some arms. During the ensuing struggle with British soldiers, three of the young men were injured. This, however, is an example of the spirit and elàn found among many Americans who wished to fight for their rights and liberties without arms and take enormous risks to secure the meaning of soldiering.*

The Marquis de Lafayette returned to Princeton and Trenton in September 2024 in the person of reenactor Michael Halbert in a bicentennial commemoration of his Grand Farewell Tour of 1824. Noted Princeton University History Professor Sean Wilentz gave a keynote address focused on Lafayette's lifelong commitment to abolishing slavery. Lafayette returned to the New Jersey State House Assembly Chamber, where the Acting Mayor of Trenton gave remarks almost identical to those of 1824. Organized by the American Friends of Lafayette, the reenactments included visits to the Trenton Historic Masonic Temple, 1 West State Street, the Old Barracks, Thomas Edison State University, and the First Presbyterian and St. Michael's Episcopal Churches in Trenton.
