🎨📝 Attention young artists! Journal 2 Journey (J2J) is back again this year! J2J is a New York City-based, pre-professional, creative youth development program that presents poetry in a three-dimensional way by allowing youth to re-imagine and re-define their poetry as theatrical one-act plays.

🖋️✨Developed in partnership with and Hi-ARTS, six youth participants between the ages of 16 to 20 will participate in a PAID 12-week intensive, where they will be working collaboratively with professional theater artists to refine their writing and devise a theatrical production.

🌟✍️ J2J is designed to inspire young artists to imagine the possibilities of writing that expand beyond traditional forms, styles, and genres while providing a platform that celebrates young voices. Previous participants have gone on to pursue successful careers as stage actors, playwrights, and designers.

📽️Hang with us this Thursday at 7 pm for "Conference Call: Moving Image The Long Way." Bring your pillows, blankets, snacks, and drinks for a comfy night in! 🛋️🍿 "The Long Way" is a Video Screening of works by artists who attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

🎥"The Long Way" features artists Ximena Diaz, Santiago Forero, Nicholas Fraser, Joe Harjo, Cyriaco Lopes, Nicolás Mastracchio, Rocio Olivarez, and Carlos Vielma, curated by Jesus Benavente.

⭐Curatorial Statement by Jesus Benavente, "To go the long way requires an acknowledgement of time and its use. It’s an acknowledgment that the shortest and most direct way isn’t the best way for a particular trip. The long way provides an opportunity to appreciate what passes us by. To have the difficult conversations we have been avoiding. Or because the normalized route just isn’t available."

From our Friends 🧑🏾‍🤝‍🧑🏿 Urban Word

Join us for an evening of powerful dialogue at Urban Word NYC's Summer Series event, "Poets & Politicians." This community-oriented conversation will feature Harlem’s own NY State Assembly candidate, Shana Harmongoff, and the National Youth Poet Laureate, Stephanie Pacheco, a dynamic poet and activist from the Bronx.

Our youth are frustrated and disenchanted with the political process, often feeling unheard and ignored by politicians. This event aims to bridge that gap, fostering a meaningful conversation even amidst differing opinions. Inspired by Shirley Chisholm’s powerful words, we ask: “What is the alternative? What can we offer these beautiful, angry, serious, and committed young people?”

Let’s come together to strategize and explore how our youth can remain politically active and engaged in a system they’ve lost faith in. Your voice matters—let’s amplify it.

Date: Friday, July 26th
Time: 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Location: Harlem School of the Arts, 645 St Nicholas Ave, New York, NY 10030
