✨For our Debrief section ✨we asked 3 brief questions about their latest exhibition.

Salonul de Proiecte—a contemporary art space in Bucharest— launched a new project inviting artists to engage with the Mihai Oroveanu Image Collection, a vast photographic archive reflecting Romania’s past through the eyes of artist, curator, and museum director Mihai Oroveanu.

We’re highlighting here Adrian Ganea’s exhibition Unholy Machine, which, starting from the archive, looks at specific historical moments during the intense urbanization and industrialization of the world, and more specifically of Romania. The show questions the contradictions of modernization and the ripple effects of technological progress.

Our Reading at the Bath House is happening tomorrow, Thursday, January 30th, and we’ve been at capacity for a while now. (Alas! We wish we could host everyone and still preserve that special feeling we’re after—but this is just the beginning.)

Three amazing writers/artists will be guiding us through the intense, sexy, twisted, and beautiful texts they’ve written:

✨ Geoffrey Mak ~ author of the personal essay collection MEAN BOYS, published by Bloomsbury last May. His writing has appeared in the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Artforum, The Guardian, and elsewhere. He’s currently at work on a novel.
✨ Journey Streams ~ writer and artist based in Brooklyn.
✨ Simon Wu ~ writer and artist, whose debut book, Dancing On My Own, was published by HarperCollins. His writing has appeared in The Paris Review, Bookforum, The Drift, The New Yorker, and he was awarded an Andy Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant in 2021.

Mike Kelley: Petting Zoo, 2007
Mixed media installation with video projections, sound

Created for Skulptur Projekte Münster 07, Kelley’s piece was inspired by the biblical story of Lot, alongside themes of domesticated animals. The installation featured a chicken coop, a goat tower, and a round barn, with a salt-lick sculpture of Lot’s wife at its center.
Lot’s wife is a pivotal yet enigmatic figure in the story of S***m and Gomorrah. Though she is not named in the Bible, she is remembered more for her symbolic role than for her identity. According to the story, when God decided to destroy S***m and Gomorrah for their wickedness, he sent two angels to warn Lot. The angels told Lot and his family to flee and not look back but as they escaped, Lot’s wife looked back to the burning city, and turned into a pillar of salt. Lot and his two daughters fled to the mountains and took refuge in a cave. Believing they were the last people on Earth they made a plan to preserve their family line. Over two nights, the girls gave their father wine to intoxicate him, then each lay with him without his knowledge. As a result, both daughters became pregnant.

Petting Zoo is such a perfect work for Münster’s own turbulent past. But that’s a story for another time...

Skulptur Projekte Münster 07 was curated by , , and for the Westfalian Museum of Art and Cultural History, Münster, Germany.

This must be one of my favorite all time artworks: “Calamita Cosmica”.
Gino De Dominicis (1947-1998) created Calamita Cosmica in 1989, nine years before his own death. It traveled around Europe for many years before making its final home: the former church of the Santissima Trinità in Annunziata in Foligno.
The sculpture is 24 m high by 4 m wide (what is that in Ft again?) with a beautiful pointy nasal bone and a long golden rod resting on the middle finger.

🌿 This week marks the final stretch of the Living Content Biennial: EARTHCAKE with the last two creative workshops for kids happening on Thursday (tomorrow) and Friday! 🌟
These free weekly workshops are part of the Biennial’s educational initiative, designed to engage local schoolchildren with the exhibition and its artworks. The incredibly inventive Irina Bălan has created an interactive tour of the exhibition, filled with playful games that encourage kids to unleash their creativity, develop critical thinking, and work together as a team. We are so grateful for her amazing talent!
The journey begins with Adrian Ganea’s artwork and gently moves towards Lito Kattou’s pieces, where the kids use flashlights to cast shadows, bringing the stories of the artworks to life.
Next, Irina introduces a fun game where teams of kids interpret Nona Inescu’s “Reliquaries” by becoming living sculptures. Each sculpture is then given a title, and the team imagines the magical powers it possesses.
Then, with flashlights in hand, the kids gather to read and “eat” Jenna Sutela’s ENERGY poem, sparking a lively discussion about what energy is, how it circulates, and why they’re able to eat the paper!
After watching Geta Brătescu’s video work “EARTHCAKE,” the final game begins. Inspired by Brătescu’s piece, the kids use clay, earth, water, and flower seeds to create little “Bombs” based on the Guerrilla Gardening concept. These “bombs” protect the seeds, helping them sprout anywhere the kids choose to plant them.
One of the highlights was the spontaneous breaks where everyone touched and even licked the salty walls—like a magical ritual or a performance in itself. ✨
Living Content Biennial: EARTHCAKE is co-funded by the National Cultural Fund Administration (AFCN). This project does not necessarily represent the position of the AFCN. The AFCN is not responsible for the content of the project or the ways in which the results of the project may be used. These are entirely the responsibility of the funding recipient.
