I am very excited that these portraits will be shown in Canada in “At Face Value” curated by Robert Curcio and Leah Oates at Station Independent in Toronto Canada 🍁
Opening reception: Friday, July 5th, 6:00pm to 8:00 pm
On view until Saturday, July 27, until 6:00pm
These portraits of murdered trans women Iris Santos, age 22, Marquiisha Lawrence, age 28, Brooklyn Deshuna age 20, and Nina Pop, age age 28, are part of a series of many more originally created as protest signs, visuals for memorials and part of countless protests and marches. In many ways these paintings served as place holders for the beings killed by homophobia, racism and transphobia who couldn’t be on the streets with us and in other ways they served as memorial pictures. I painted many victims over a period of a year, wanting to show the beauty, light and strength within everyone I painted, in the same way as old paintings of saints from my birth country do. Thereby in a personal way transforming the meaning. I feel it is important to create the world we want to live in, by creating from a place of love and unity to counter the energy of fear and separation so apparently prevalent right now and these portraits did that for me. I see light, love and beauty within everyone depicted.
All are oil on board, 11x16”
