Theatre East stirs the human side of current issues by fostering new plays of social relevance through New York and World Premieres. The 501(c)3 nonprofit theatre company's mission is to advance the dialogue of the shared human experience through works that utilize simple storytelling, providing their community with a platform to deepen their understanding of themselves, each other and the world they share.

An Ordinary Afternoon in 1974, written by Obie and GLAAD Award winner, Daniel MacIvor (In On It, Never Swim Alone) and featuring Carla Briscoe (Blue Caprice, A Little Help) and Elizabeth played by Holly Cinnamon (Marvel's Daredevil, HBO's Succession) opened on Friday, May 1, and audiences can't stop talking about it.

What begins as an ordinary afternoon quickly becomes a story that refuses to stay quiet. BOLD, IRREVERENT, and full of JOY, the play follows two longtime friends and neighbors as they revisit their shared past. It's a vibrant celebration of women claiming their space, their voices, and their extraordinary power.

"Look at these ordinary days of ours, how they inform everything." says MacIvor "The ordinary afternoons that end and begin the chapters of our lives."

You never know what you're going to retrieve from the mailbox. What a beautiful, encouraging surprise. I don't know what we did to deserve such a gift from Ellen Webster, but we will relish it. Thank you for your spirit and the reminder to connect. "I attend shows for the moment my heart collides with the stories well told—when the air crackles with all it means to be human."
Thank you.

The long-standing chair of a fine arts department finds her commitment to traditional aesthetic and artistic values challenged when she must award three students a prestigious cash prize for a piece of contemporary artwork. As she probes the students about their contributions to the project, it becomes increasingly unclear whether the students qualify to receive the prize and whether the traditional values still matter. Will the girls receive the prize, or not? A play about how people determine what is valuable and what is not in arts, artists, and education.

Spent the afternoon reading some cool plays. Is one of them our spring production? Possibly! Stay tuned!
