The Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC) celebrates the rich musical legacy of the Bronx by drawing upon and restoring pride in its history. The BMHC honors Bronx music "Living Legends", hosts concerts and discussions, celebrates music history, and provides artists with a space to create and share their work. The Bronx Music Heritage Center is an initiative of WHEDco (www.whedco.org). The BMHC Labor
atory opened in April 2012 at 1303 Louis Niñé Boulevard, Bronx, NY. The lab is a "pop-up" space to share and experience art and music. Artists are given the chance to curate the space with concerts, screenings, installations, and other events. Building off the success of the BMHC lab, WHEDco will open a permanent music venue and cultural center, the Bronx Music Hall, in Bronx Commons, its third affordable housing development, currently under construction. Bronx Commons will transform the final undeveloped parcel of the Melrose Commons Urban Renewal Area into a vibrant center for living, working, learning, shopping and entertainment – including 305 affordable apartments, a landscaped public plaza, places to eat and shop, all anchored by the Bronx Music Hall. WHEDco and co-developer BFC Partners began construction on Bronx Commons in 2017. BMHC programming is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. The BMHC is deeply grateful to the many contributors, including the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, whose generous gifts help provide free community arts programming. Lend your support and get involved: Like this page, tell your friends, or simply visit www.thisisbronxmusic.org to learn more about the BMHC and the vibrant community that is the Bronx!

There was music, poetry and resource tables. OXIL FEBLES was joined by ANGEL RODRIGUEZ, GABRIEL ORTIZ and DR. DRUM to perform Afro-Puerto Rican bomba. Then they were joined onstage by JOSE RIVERA.
The weather stopped the street co-naming ceremony for the AFRICAN JAZZ ARTS SOCIETY & STUDIO at the corner of Kelly and Longwood from happening today but we had the reception at the BMHC. But family and friends of AJASS members gathered to speak about the significance of Elombe Brath, Kwame Brathwaite, Bob Gumbs and others on fashion (the Grandassa Models), photography, music, politics and more. Some of the Grandassa models (original members and the new generation) are pictured together, as well as artwork by Elombe and Kwame. The event was made possible by Cinque Brath and the Elombe Brath Foundation.
The street co-naming will be held next week, Saturday, September 30th.
This past September 20th was also the 50th anniversary of the death of singer-songwriter JIM CROCE who died in a plane crash shortly after take-off from a concert in Louisiana. He lived in the BRONX briefly and according to his biography, he didn't really like it. But we remember his music fondly. Listen to his song, "Tomorrow's Gonna Be A Brighter Day."

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the great Chilean poet PABLO NERUDA. He was immersed in the socio-political landscape of his own country and others (he helped refugees fleeing from Franco's regime to settle in Chile). Here is one of his poems, "Bird" that portrays the musicality of the natural world:
It was passed from one bird to another,
the whole gift of the day.
The day went from flute to flute,
went dressed in vegetation,
in flights which opened a tunnel
through the wind would pass
to where birds were breaking open
the dense blue air -
and there, night came in.
When I returned from so many journeys,
I stayed suspended and green
between sun and geography -
I saw how wings worked,
how perfumes are transmitted
by feathery telegraph,
and from above I saw the path,
the springs and the roof tiles,
the fishermen at their trades,
the trousers of the foam;
I saw it all from my green sky.
I had no more alphabet
than the swallows in their courses,
the tiny, shining water
of the small bird on fire
which dances out of the pollen.

Poets and Jazz musicians will take part in an all-star concert for Keith LaMar, who has spent almost 34 years in solitary confinement on death row in Ohio for a crime he didn’t commit. Freedom First began in 2020 as a concert series with dozens of musicians on the streets of New York, playing the jazz standards that helped LaMar survive these long decades in solitary, including him speaking live by telephone between songs. This very special event is presented by La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio and The Village Trip Festival.
This fall the BMHC is partnering with the INFINITE VARIETY PRODUCTIONS (IVP) as part of our UpRISE Theater program. Auditions are this Sunday to take part in an IVP work-in-progress.

This weekend JOSE FRANCISCO AVILA (who is on the BMHC's Advisory Committee) led the first Garifuna history walking tour in NYC. Sponsored through the Historic District Council, the tour, "Exploring the Significance of the Happy Land Memorial," used the tragic 1990 fire as the focal point to talk about the larger Bronx Garifuna community. The fire at the social club brought the Garifuna community into the public eye. Jose Francisco's tour led the group down Crotona Parkway pointing out places where the Garifuna community lived and gathered over the years. The tour ended at the Happyland memorial at the Plaza de los Ochenta y Siete, which honors the 87 people who died in the fire, many of whom were Garifuna, mostly from Honduras and some also from Guatemala.
It's definite--we are moving the ELMO HOPE CENTENNIAL concert indoors. Tomorrow looks as though it will be soggy all day. The concert will be MOVED INDOORS to the BMHC at 1303 Louis Nine Blvd. Still at 3:00 pm.

It was 50 years ago today that the legendary party that gave birth to what is now HIP HOP happened at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. DJ KOOL HERC organized a party with his sister Cindy and the rest is history. Kool Herc is also a BMHC BRONX LIVING LEGEND.
On August 12, 1973, DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell rented the rec room in their apartment building for $25. The party in the tiny room with linoleum floors, steel-encased radiators, and white-tiled drop ceiling, would change their lives forever. Hip-Hop was born.

When you're in the Bronx you have to stop by Casa Amadeo, the longest continually-run music store in NYC--founded at that site by Rafael Hernandez's sister, Victoria in 1941 and sold to Mike in 1969. Take the 2 or 5 train to Prospect Avenue and the store is right there. The BMHC Laboratory opened in April 2012 at 1303 Louis Niñé Boulevard, Bronx, NY. Lend your support and get involved: Like this page, tell your friends, or simply visit www.thisisbronxmusic.org to learn more about the BMHC and the vibrant community that is the Bronx!
