Join us on May 30 for “We Keep Us Safe: Sanctuary Movements Past and Present,” the first program in “Toward Sanctuary”—Creative Time’s new series exploring sanctuary as a living history and ongoing aspiration, inspired by Guadalupe Maravilla’s artistic practice and upcoming public art commission.

What does it mean to build sanctuary, together? 🌱

Creative Time announces Toward Sanctuary, a series of programs about sanctuary as a living history and ongoing aspiration, inspired by Guadalupe Maravilla’s artistic practice and upcoming Creative Time public art commission.

Co-curated by Celine Wong Katzman and Dr. Gervais Marsh with Buffy Sierra, the series is grounded in the history of sanctuary movements in the US and Maravilla’s practice of building community-centered spaces for holistic wellbeing, and contends with the possibilities and limitations of cultivating sanctuary across legacies of public and socially engaged art.

Starting this month, programs will take place at CTHQ and across New York City, bringing together artists, cultural workers, organizers, and neighbors to consider sanctuary as both refuge and collective practice.

Through teach-ins, talks, dance parties, and healing sessions, the series unfolds:

🗓️ May 30: We Keep Us Safe: Sanctuary Movements Past and Present with Black Alliance for Just Immigration, Cinthya Santos Briones, and Dr. Lloyd Barba

🗓️ June 10: Rooted: Cultivating Sanctuary in the Mind and Body with

🗓️ June 27: Sanctuary After Dark: Legacies of Q***r Nightlife from C**t Club to Body Hack | Presented in collaboration with Body Hack’s 48 Hour Pride Nonstop with Alice O’Malley, Lola Flash, and Julie Tolentino and more

🗓️ July 9: Tending Sanctuary: Plants to the People with Herban Cura

🗓️ July 29: We Keep Us Safe: Sanctuary as Collective Practice with Reverend Juan Carlos Ruiz and

A beautiful evening of sound, collaborators, and vinyl ❤️‍🔥

Earlier this spring, we gathered at Public Records to celebrate the release of "If you hear something, free something" by Chloë Bass, a public artwork in sound presented by Creative Time and MTA Arts & Design.

The limited-edition vinyl gathers the refrains once echoed through NYC subway stations during Bass's Fall 2025 public art project, alongside remixes by Bill Dietz and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste. Accompanied by a booklet of essays and an interview, the record is an aural archive reflecting on the possibilities for connection and recognition in the public spaces we share.

Special thanks to Hellbender Vinyl for pressing the and to public records for hosting.

🚇🗣️ There’s still time to bring a copy home. Grab your limited-edition vinyl here: checkout.square.site/merchant/NFY100BEM9J71/checkout/G4JN4FFOIQ3W7TTT7T3ZIL6J

𝑶𝒉 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕! ✨

Under the rosy glow of the Russian Tea Room, Creative Time’s 2026 Gala brought together artists, collaborators, friends, and supporters for a celebration of public art, community, and a bold new chapter ahead.

In partnership with Nordstrom, we honored Guadalupe Maravilla, Michelle Coffey, and Molly Gochman, whose practices continue to shape the dialogues, debates, and dreams of our time.

From cocktails to dinner to our iconic 𝑨𝑭𝑻𝑬𝑹 𝑯𝑶𝑼𝑹𝑺 𝑷𝑨𝑹𝑻𝒀, vibes were high, conversation flowed, and the dance floor was full. There were cymbal-clanging bears, glasses raised, and so much joy—but what stays with us most is the energy of a community gathering around artists and ideas that push form, take risks, and imagine new ways of being together.

We are deeply grateful to our Board, Co-Chairs, Benefit Committees, and all who made this night possible. An extra special thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies, Casa Dragones Tequila, and HOUSE of WARIS Botanicals for helping bring such warmth and spirit to the night. That spirit carries forward. As Creative Time steps into this next chapter, there is so much ahead.

A very Creative Time project is when you can really feel the alchemy between a visionary artist, a bold idea and the space in which their project is sited."— Jean Cooney

That alchemy has shaped the work of Creative Time for over 50 years, unexpected projects that take risks, push form, and leave an indelible mark. In Jean's recent interview with Observer, Jean reflects on the ideas that continue to drive the organization forward.

As we look toward Creative Time’s 2026 Gala, we’re thinking in that same spirit and about what’s coming next.

To close out Women’s History Month–and the conversations we carry year-round–we look back to a 2013 Creative Time project that transformed a a residential Brooklyn block into a space for collective dialogue. 🏙️🗣️

On October 19, 2013, Creative Time and the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum presented "Between the Door and the Street," a work by artist Suzanne Lacy. Around 400 women, and a few men, gathered along the stoops of Park Place in Brooklyn to engage in unscripted conversations about gender, labor, and pressing social issues. Thousands of visitors wandered among the groups, listening, reflecting, and forming their own understanding of the complexities of contemporary life.

The project grew out of months of deep dialogue and collaboration with a diverse group of advisors, ensuring that every conversation carried lived experience, urgency, and insight. Lacy’s work transformed public space into a platform for civic engagement, showing how collective voices can illuminate the challenges women navigate daily and create possibilities for community building and organizing.
