Happy Seollal 설날! Today marks the Lunar New Year in Korea. 2026 is the Fire Horse year which arrives once every sixty years, and it does not arrive quietly. The Fire Horse is passionate, ungovernable, and constitutionally opposed to standing still. Traditionalists once warned that daughters born under its sign would be too fierce and independent! Traits that we hold in high regard today.

Happy Korean American Day!

Today we honor the memory of Philip Jaisohn, the first Korean American.

On a cold January morning in 1890, a twenty‑five‑year‑old named Seo Jae‑pil stood in a Washington, D.C., courtroom and took the oath that made him the first Korean to become a citizen of the United States.

In exile from his homeland, where the repressive government had killed most of his family members, the young man had already lived through more turmoil and tragedy than most old men. That day, Seo officially adopted a new name, Philip Jaisohn, and began life as the first Korean American. There was no ceremony or celebration on that January day, and the significance of the occasion would only become clear decades later as Korean Americans began to build thriving communities and claim their place in the United States.
