As part of our Pride Month series, we spoke with artist and public art champion Ed Woodham, who is most known for leading the public art group Art in Odd Places.

Since 2005, the group has held carnavalesque, DIY annual street festivals that have become a New York cultural fixture.

Dr. Michael Kilburn is a Professor of Political Science and International Studies at Endicott College in Beverly, MA and a lifelong amateur Bohemianist. His 2001 PhD dissertation (Institute of the Liberal Arts, Emory University) examined the function of the cultural underground and political dissent under late socialism in Czechoslovakia. His teaching and research interests include American government, political theory, public policy, human rights, oral history, narratology, and geography. He is the founding director of the Endicott Center for Oral History and the Narrative Studies Colloquia. Alongside his academic career, he has worked in the arts for more than forty years as a theater and gallery technician, multimedia constructivist, puppeteer, musician, and producer.

El Dr. Michael Kilburn es Profesor de Ciencias Políticas y Estudios Internacionales en Endicott College, en Beverly, Massachusetts, y un bohemio aficionado de toda la vida. Su disertación doctoral de 2001 (Instituto de Artes Liberales, Universidad Emory) examinó la función de la contracultura y la disidencia política bajo el socialismo tardío en Checoslovaquia. Diana Boros is Professor of Political Theory in the Political Science Department at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the National Honors College. She is also affiliated faculty in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at SMCM. She has published books on the topics of art, public art, politics, and public space, and is creator of the video podcast series “Hosting Art”. She makes art whenever and wherever she can.

An open call from our friends Flux Factory:

Flux Factory is pleased to announce an open call for Dark Matters at Flux IV, Flux Factory’s new exhibition and project space in Hunters Point South. We are calling all performers, sound artists, or musicians in any of the five boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island) to submit works responding to the themes of surveillance, anti-surveillance, countersurveillance, and the lived or inherited experience of ‘being watched’. 

Performing artists will be given a $500 stipend, in addition to Flux Factory resources, including visits to Materials for the Arts. Artist duos/collectives will be considered. Due to the large number of submissions for this open call, Flux Factory can not provide individual application feedback.

Application Closes at 11:59 EST on July 1st, 2026

Last by certainly not least, our amazing Thinkers-In-Residence:

Researcher and Curator. Her work focuses on aesthetics, ethics, and politics, with an emphasis on feminist, public, Latin American, Chicano, and Latinx art. She is currently the curator of Laboratorio Arte Alameda, co-editor of the journal Voces (Museo Universitario  del Chopo), and a postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate Program in Historiography at UAM Azcapotzalco, where she researches artistic exchanges between Mexico and the Chicano art in California. Her recent publications include Arquitectura hostil. Tecnologías urbanas de la exclusión (2022), the co-edited volume Coordenadas móviles: Redes de colaboración entre mujeres en la cultura y el arte (1975-1985) (2024), and Pensar en argenmex: Literatura, archivo y memoria en torno al exilio argentino en México (2025). Additionally, she coordinated the “Latinx Aesthetics” Symposium for the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism (2025).

Investigadora y curadora. Su trabajo está enfocado en estética, ética y política, con énfasis en arte feminista, arte público, arte latinoamericano, chicano y Latinx. Actualmente es curadora del Laboratorio Arte Alameda, coeditora de la revista Voces (Museo Universitario del Chopo) y realiza una estancia posdoctoral en el Departamento del Posgrado en Historiografía en la UAM Azcapotzalco sobre los intercambios entre el arte chicano de California y México. Pancho López estudió Ciencias de la Comunicación en la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de la UNAM. Durante once años se desempeñó como Jefe del Departamento de Performance y Arte Actual del Museo Universitario del Chopo. Ha coordinado varios festivales: Performagia, Transmuted y Extra!. López ha participado en exposiciones y festivales de arte performance en Latinoamérica, Europa, Canadá y Estados Unidos. Es autor del libro Centroamérica en acción: Una aproximación al performance centroamericano y algunos de sus protagonistas, publicado por el Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) de Costa Rica, el Centro Cultural de España en Costa Rica y el Museo La Neomudéjar. Coordina la Red Mexicana de Performance perfoREDmx.

Pancho López studied Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at UNAM. For eleven years, he served as Head of the Department of Performance and Contemporary Art at Museo Universitario del Chopo. He has coordinated several festivals: Performagia, Transmuted, and Extra!. López has participated in performance art exhibitions and festivals in Latin America, Europe, Canada and the United States. Introducing our co-curators!

Arantxa Araujo es una artista de performance q***r mexicana que se mueve entre la Ciudad de México y Nueva York, ensamblando experiencias inmersivas temporales con aliento, luz, movimiento, cera y transeúntes. Su práctica se ramifica como una neurona, enviando señales a través de cuerpos, disciplinas y públicos.
Nutriéndose de la neurociencia, la ceremonia y la imaginación colectiva, Araujo crea encuentros participativos que invitan a desconocidos a espacios compartidos de reflexión, vulnerabilidad y pausa sagrada. Interesada en comprender nuestros múltiples cuerpos — biológico, social, emocional y energético — como formas de navegar la complejidad, su trabajo explora cómo el movimiento viaja a través de individuos y colectivos, moldeando cómo nos reunimos, sentimos y transformamos juntos. Araujo está emocionada de co-curar AiOP 2026: UTOPIAS, imaginando los sistemas y espacios que anhelamos habitar — y practicando cómo construirlos, aunque sea temporalmente, como forma de ensayar nuevas posibilidades.

Arantxa Araujo is a q***r Mexican performance artist moving between Mexico City and New York, assembling temporary immersive experiences with breath, light, movement, wax, and passersby. Their practice branches like a neuron, sending signals across bodies, disciplines, and publics.
Drawing from neuroscience, ceremony, and collective imagination, Araujo creates participatory encounters that invite strangers into shared spaces of reflection, vulnerability, and sacred pause. Interested in understanding our multiple bodies—biological, social, emotional, and energetic—as ways of navigating complexity, their work explores how movement travels through individuals and groups, shaping how we gather, sense, and transform together. Araujo is excited to be co-curating AiOP 2026: UTOPIAS, imagining the systems and spaces we long to inhabit—and practicing how to build them, even temporarily, as a way of rehearsing new possibilities.

Juliana Maurer (they/she) is a Brooklyn-based artist, graphic designer, and community organizer. Raised in Asheville, NC, their practice is deeply informed by the people and landscapes of Southern Appalachia, where much of their activism and creative work remains rooted. 

Their practice focuses on social engagement, collaborative and participatory art, and radical printmaking, drawing influence from DIY and protest movements. Maurer is the co-founder of Mossy Press, a collaborative riso studio dedicated to publishing artistsʼ books and printed matter. Through collaborative making, and drawing from lineages of direct action and community care, they seek to build community networks and use artistic interventions to support moments and movements for collective liberation.

Juliana Maurer (elle/ella) es artista, diseñadora gráfica y organizadora comunitaria radicada en Brooklyn. Criada en Asheville, Carolina del Norte, su práctica está profundamente marcada por las personas y paisajes de los Apalaches del Sur, región donde siguen arraigados gran parte de su activismo y trabajo creativo.
Su práctica se centra en el arte participativo y de compromiso social, la impresión radical y el trabajo colaborativo, nutriéndose de los movimientos DIY y de protesta. Maurer es cofundadora de Mossy Press, un estudio colaborativo de risografía dedicado a la publicación de libros de artista y material impreso. A través de la creación colectiva, y bebiendo de las tradiciones de acción directa y cuidado comunitario, busca tejer redes entre comunidades y usar intervenciones artísticas para acompañar momentos y movimientos hacia la liberación colectiva.

DKU is a revisiting and continuation of “Kidnap Me,” presented by Dixon Place HOT! Festival 2014 and “Kidnap Me Again” presented by LaMaMa Squirts 2025.
The World Premiere was performed by Arantxa Araujo, Tyler Ashley, Diego Montoya, Image Object, Shane O’Neill, Rakia Seaborn, and Gillian Walsh.
