Shakespeare Sports Theatre Socially Conscious Theatre through Shakespeare

Shakespeare Sports work is two fold: for community and for children with autism:

Shakespeare Sports works and plays on the Works of William Shakespeare for children with autism through the Hunter Heartbeat Method. Shakespeare Sports works and plays on the Works of William Shakespeare for community involvement and entertainment.

Wrapping up the play at home videos for the Forest Scene in As You Like It that I adapted in Hunter Hunter Heartbeat, (first seeing an idea and giving credit to having seen an example creating Hunter Heartbeat adapted theatre from Notre Dame University who shared work and family activities through an online program and I checked in with the creator and asked if it would be okay if I tried to also adapt scenes based on what I had viewed.). Here are my latest As You Like It Play At Home Games, Character of TouchStone. Thank you Zaria Monae for your work as Touchstone!

Thank you so much Andrew for the interview!! Shakespeare Sports has really been working to fine tune our work in adapted theatre games. Glad to talk about it. UPDATED: The podcast was recorded a few months ago and I talk about my approach to learning Hunter Heartbeat on my own and what that was like. I talk about blending prompting as a registered behavior technician with the art of play, as well as play through the games for learning a story, and learning from the book Shakespeare's Heartbeat, and a separate but connected issue, being a special needs mom. I'd very much like to hear opinions on what people think. Thank you again to Andrew for interviewing me. Thank you to Jay for inviting me to express interest in the podcast.

I plan to share the organization name and details planned for spring / summer for Hunter Heartbeat games in scenes and will hopefully share more information in June / July.

Shakespeare Sports Theatre and Carrie Edel Isaacman are fostering an engaging and necessary program bringing the Bard to those who would be enriched by the works in countless ways: Shakespeare Sports Theatre Company is dedicated to the adapted work of Kelly Hunter's Hunter Heartbeat teaching social emotional skills to children and young adults with autism and developmental delays which leads to greater focus, clearer behavior and deepened relationships with school communities and family, through adapted games in scenes from the works of William Shakespeare as adapted by Kelly Hunter and based on adapted work by Kelly Hunter

It's Small Business Saturday. I would like to share my thanks for support of Shakespeare Sports Theatre games from adapted Shakespeare from Pericles and Midsummer Nights Dream that we have worked on over the past few years. In planning for the upcoming year I would like to say some of the items that I plan for artists such as artist fees for rehearsal and for shows, photography fees to document activities, materials sometimes needed for shows such as images that we use and the cost for creating the materials for adapting the plays. If you have a moment, please look at the website, look at the work samples and please donate any amount.

Today a cast worked on games in a scene from my adapted Hunter Heartbeat As You Like It in development in our second rehearsal. The second rehearsal, responding from advice from one of the cast members of the workshop, I focused on teaching the games in each scene. I could have called each cast member individually, however decided that between calling each cast member individually, it was more of a collaborative process to teach each actor the game for the character and then to ask cast members to then play along with the cast member, so it was a fun experience for all. Some of the games were published from Hunter Heartbeat, and some from the online Pericles games. In the script I have noted all references. My next steps for this scene that we worked will be to adapt each game for each actor so that we will be creating Play at Home Hunter Heartbeat As You Like It games, for students and caregivers to practice games from the play in preparation for an interactive show. The next rehearsal is currently being scheduled for next month, when I should have each game adapted from the script for each actor.

At YAI Pre-service training. YAI requires annual pre-service training of all volunteers. Enjoying the talk about individual with special needs and caretaking. Grateful for YAI, Most of my Hunter Heartbeat work has been through YAI volunteering.

Shakespeare Sports Theatre feels the loss of Queen Elizabeth who was also Royal Patron for the Royal Shakespeare Company, who was part of development of Hunter Heartbeat Method. And though Shakespeare Sports did not develop the work, Shakespeare Sports is grateful so that we can take part in it for individuals who are most in need to theatre for social emotional learning.

Congratulations to the cast of Workers from Midsummer Nights Dream Hunter Heartbear online show with YAI today. Here are mechanicals playing and following along.

Thank you to Manhattan Star Academy, a school from YAI, for Hunter Heartbeat scenes from Mechanicals, which we renamed Workers from 1/7 to 2/17 in the elementary school, where we met once a week for six weeks. This past week I gave an overview of the whole play of Midsummer Nights Dream to the class. Students look forward to the interactive show with Shakespeare Sports cast, and our cast, in turn, looks forward to giving their Mechanicals Hunter Heartbeat show on August 4th.

Shakespeare Sports is planting seeds of growing an adapted As You Like It Hunter Heartbeat. This upcoming Sunday July 17th at 2 pm Shakespeare Sports is meeting with a group of actors who are giving of thier time to be a part of the first reading of this workshop of As You Like It Hunter Heartbeat, for children with autism. The workshop will also feature an open rehearsal of scenes and games from Shakespeare's Heartbeat from The Tempest.
The purpose of the workshop is to hear the adaptation and to work with the games. A goal that I have is to then take notes that I will discover as a result of the reading and workshop and to then hopefully work towards another workshop in preparation for school that Shakespeare Sports works with and to start to have additional shows in addition to Pericles and Midsummer Nights Dream.
If anyone would like an invitation, please email me at [email protected] and I will forward a Zoom link.

On the topic of moms in Shakespeare's plays I just saw a company posting about this topic and just wanted to add here to the conversation. Moms in Shakespeare's plays: In addition to Thaisa in Pericles and Hermione in Winters Tale, Mistress Page and Mistress Ford in Merry Wives of Windsor who are fun moms, and The Abyss in Comedy of Errors who surprises the audience as being a mom, and Tamara in very scary mom in Coriolanus, and there are moms in the Histories such as Queen Elizabeth and Margaret. Here are photos from Shakespeare Sports mom's Yvonne Marchese as Hermione from the staged reading in 2018, Mary Price as Thaisa from the Pericles on Zoom that was at the beginning of the pandemic, then with a change of casts Diana Nam as Thaisa from the online Pericles which was geared for Hunter Heartbeat in 2020, and Mary Sheridan as Gertrude in Hamlet that was at Los Kabaytos Theatre at Clemente Center in 2021

Happy Shakespeare's Birthday!! In honor of Shakespeare's birthday, I will start posting questions about Shakespeare's plays. Since Shakespeare Sports is planning a production of Hamlet scheduled in August, here is a question about Hamlet: Was Hamlet crazy? Or was he just pretending?

Happy World Voice Day!!

04/03/2022

Happy World Autism Day! Here is a quote that I just read, "My child with autism is not ignoring you, he is just waiting for you to enter his world". I don't know who said the quote, it's around on the internet, and every place I see it does not quote the person who said this. I wanted to share this quote for World Autism Day.
