silence doesn’t mean nothing is happening. it allows me to notice the things that have been happening the whole time - I just couldn’t hear them over the noise.

1. when I actually sit still, I start noticing sounds I often filter out. the rhythmic pattern of the tram. the conversation of tourist nearby in a language you don’t understand but you like the melody. that’s where a lot of my songs start.

2. once I’m tuned into that outside sound for a whole I start hearing better what’s going on inside me too. the melody I hadn’t quite let finish. the lyric idea I though of a few days back.

I will always be for a regular writing practice, for deadlines, time limits, analysis, for sitting with your instrument and transcribing, etc.

But sometimes sitting down in the sun (and the sound) can be just as beneficial:) ☀️

It’s 2015, my second year in the U.S. I’m doing everything I can to stay afloat. That includes babysitting for a family who decides to take a weekend trip to their Newport home. Turns out it’s the exact same weekend as the Newport Jazz Festival. There’s talk of taking their boat out to see it from the water. I look at the lineup. Cassandra Wilson is playing. I am so excited I can barely fall asleep the night before.

Then plans change. The parents decide not to take the kids with them on the boat. I’m at the house, watching them all day. My heart is breaking. I’m this close to an artist I only ever knew from my computer screen in Slovakia, and I can’t go.

So then, buried in the program in tiny cursive letters, I find a mention of a late night press after party nearby. I find the address. I make my way there, and there she is, singing a few feet in front of me. I stand there, listening, and I’m overjoyed. When I go up to her, she looks at me and just says, “Darling, everything that’s meant for you will come.”

Rest in peace, Cassandra Wilson.

I saw a jazz orchestra concert this weekend and it made me miss my orchestra days and this crew. 🫶🏻
