Meet An Chéad Ghlúin Eile (ACGE)
An Chéad Ghlúin Eile translates to "The Next Generation." This sister duo, Étáin and Máire Ní Churraoin, are native Irish speakers from the Ráth Chairn Gaeltacht in County Meath. They are the grand-nieces of the legendary sean-nós singer Darach Ó Catháin, carrying forward a deep family legacy. By blending traditional unaccompanied singing with a modern sensibility, they prove that the Irish language is a vibrant, living force for a new era.
A massive thank you to the team at The Fleet Hotel for welcoming us into their stunning 1920s-style lobby. This beautifully preserved boutique space provided the perfect sophisticated backdrop for this Global Sound Concerts session.

Standing on the banks of the River Liffey in Dublin, Seán performs in the shadow of the Jeanie Johnston, a faithful replica of the 19th-century tall ship that carried Irish emigrants to North America during the Great Famine.

The Connection: Song & Ship
Written by Barry Moore and popularized by his brother Christy Moore, "The City of Chicago" serves as a modern anthem for the Irish diaspora. The lyrics—particularly the opening lines "1847 was the year it all began / Deadly pains of hunger drove a million from the land"—directly mirror the era in which the original Jeanie Johnston operated.

Between 1848 and 1855, the Jeanie Johnston made 16 transatlantic voyages, transporting approximately 2,500 people to a new life. While many vessels of the time earned the grim nickname "coffin ships" due to high mortality rates, the Jeanie Johnston is legendary for its remarkable safety record: not a single life was lost during its crossings. Seán’s performance honors the "voyage of survival" mentioned in the song, set against the very vessel that represents hope and safe passage for so many.

For this installment of Global Sound Concerts, Limerick musician Seán O'Meara performs a poignant rendition of "The City of Chicago" by Barry Moore (Luka Blo...
