Herut North America

Herut North America Herut North America is a pro-Israel movement for Jewish sovereignty in all the Land of Israel and worldwide Jewish unity. Zion Unite!

Whether we identify as American Jews, Jewish Americans, Israeli Americans, or American Israelis, the Land of Israel plays a significant role in our identities as spiritual and physical descendants of the ancient Hebrews. For thousands of years, the Jewish soul has yearned to return to Zion, to our indigenous homeland; on May 14, 1948 this hope - this Tikvah - became reality. Just as the exodus from Egypt was an arduous and painful process, the State of Israel and by extension the Israelite diaspora continues to struggle against challenges to Jewish sovereignty and freedom. In addressing the external and internal threats to Jewish liberation, Herut (meaning "freedom"), in the spirit of Zionist founding father Ze'ev Jabotinsky, seeks to do so with strength, pride, and care for all people. Herut North America is a Zionist movement that advocates Jewish sovereignty in all of Israel, Jewish unity, and Jewish-Zionist education for Jews of all ages. We embrace the diverse cultural backgrounds and religious affiliations of all Jewish people and commit to working together, unified as one people, for Jewish sovereignty in all of Israel and against all who deny Israel's right to exist. We do everything from Z to A: from Zionism to Aliyah. In this vein, Herut North America's essential activities involve assisting Jews of all backgrounds and origins to make Aliyah and integrate into Israeli society. Be it navigating through the absorption process, writing Hebrew resumes, accompanying them to government offices, or informing them of immigrant entitlements (higher education, Hebrew language programs, army service, and medical plans), Herut is here to provide them with the skills needed to adjust from a life in Galut (exile) to renewal in their homeland. Herut believes that to strengthen the Jewish State, we must reunite the people of Israel within their homeland to ensure our nation's continued security at home and abroad. With these values in mind, Herut North America's focus on impacting decision-making in the World Zionist Congress as an influential movement, is an investment in Israel's future and in our quest to guarantee the continued strength and success of the Jewish nation in truly being a light unto the nations.

For generations, the sukkah has been a place of gathering, tradition, and connection.

Sukkot is a joyous seven-day holiday that begins this year at sunset on September 25th and continues until nightfall on October 2nd. Under the Jewish calendar, Sukkot occurs in the middle of the month of Tishrei (from the 15th to the 21st of Tishrei), fifteen days after Rosh Hashanah and five days after Yom Kippur, and is immediately followed by the holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Sukkot is a harvest holiday, and it also commemorates the miraculous protection that G-d gave the Jewish people during the 40-year period in the Sinai desert following the flight from Egypt, as described in the Torah’s Book of Exodus (Shemot).

51 years ago, in 1975, Daniel Patrick Moynihan stood at the United Nations and rejected the claim that Zionism was a form of racism.

The UN General Assembly had just adopted Resolution 3379, which made that designation. Moynihan challenged it directly, arguing that Zionism was a movement of Jewish national self-determination—not racism.

The resolution was ultimately revoked by the General Assembly in 1991.

Some words from 1975 still resonate today.

🦅 76 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, AN ANCIENT JEWISH COMMUNITY CAME HOME. 🇮🇱✈️

In September 1950, the final flights of Operation Magic Carpet — “On the Wings of Eagles” — brought an extraordinary chapter of Jewish history to a close.

Nearly 49,000 Yemenite Jews had been airlifted to Israel, bringing almost the entire ancient Jewish community of Yemen to the Jewish state. (JDC Archives)

But their journey to Israel was anything but easy.

Thousands trekked across hundreds of miles of desert, often on foot, carrying children and whatever possessions they could save. They arrived in Aden exhausted, hungry and often sick, waiting for the planes that would carry them to Israel. (JDC Archives)

And then came the airplanes.

For many, it was their first time seeing an aircraft.

They weren’t simply boarding a plane.

They believed they were going home.

The operation’s name echoed the words of the Torah:

“I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.”
— Exodus 19:4

From Yemen to Aden.
From Aden to Israel.
From centuries of exile to the Jewish homeland.

🦅 On the wings of eagles, they came home.

Their story is not just Israeli history.

It is Jewish history.

🇬🇧🇵🇰 THEY SAID IT THEMSELVES: KASIM HAFEEZ

“I am a Zionist, a proud Muslim Zionist, and I love Israel.”

Meet Kasim Hafeez.

British-born, Pakistani heritage, and once deeply hostile toward Israel, Hafeez describes growing up surrounded by anti-Israel and antisemitic ideas. As a young man, he became involved in the anti-Israel movement.

Then he started questioning what he had been taught.

He read The Case for Israel by Alan Dershowitz, traveled to Israel in 2007, and encountered a country very different from the one he had imagined. He has described that visit as transformative.

Standing at the Kotel, Hafeez later recalled thinking:

“Kasim, you are a Zionist.”

And his response?

“I was pretty cool with that.”

In 2012, he put his position even more directly:

“I am a Zionist, a proud Muslim Zionist, and I love Israel.”

His public advocacy has continued for years. Today, Hafeez works in pro-Israel advocacy and speaks about Israel, antisemitism and Jewish self-determination.

You don’t have to be Jewish to be a Zionist.

Kasim Hafeez said it himself. 🇮🇱

On September 22, 1918, thirty years before Israeli independence, Jewish soldiers serving in the British Army attacked an Ottoman-held crossing of the Jordan River at Umm esh Shert.

The attack began at 5 a.m.; by 8:30, a company of the 38th Royal Fusiliers, led in part by Ze’ev Jabotinsky, had secured the crossing and dug in.

These Jewish volunteers had accomplished something veteran British Empire troops had failed to achieve at the same crossing months earlier. ANZAC mounted troops swept across behind them, pushing deeper into Ottoman-held territory as part of the wider offensive.

Thirty years before independence, a chapter of Jewish military history was already being written. Did you know this story?
