Our 700-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers in North American cities, as well as suppliers of goods and services to the commercial theatre industry. Each year, League members bring Broadway to more than 30 million people in New York and more than 200 cities across the U.S. The League supports its members through an array of programs and ev
ents designed to promote Broadway as a vibrant national entertainment medium. These include special events, industry-wide marketing initiatives, and corporate sponsorships, as well as numerous programs geared to making Broadway tickets and show information more accessible to the consumer. Other key services include overseeing government relations for the Broadway industry, maintaining extensive research archives and databases, investing in the future through audience development programs, and supporting charitable efforts benefiting the theatrical community. In all its programs and services, the League endeavors to strengthen Broadway theatre’s position as the pinnacle of live entertainment.

As we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of The Americans with Disabilities Act and this July, recipient of the 2023 Tony Awards Excellence in Theatre Education Award Jason Zembuch Young powerfully reminds us that everyone, regardless of disability, should have access to the performing arts.
This month, we celebrate and lift up those with disabilities. In partnership with Theatre Development Fund (TDF), The Broadway League created Theatre Access NYC (TheatreAccess.NYC), a website that helps theatergoers with disabilities find Broadway shows with the particular type of accessibility service they require. 2005 - Celie’s Story Comes to Broadway in “The Color Purple”
The musical "The Color Purple," based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, premiered on Broadway in 2005. The story follows Celie, a Black woman in the American South during the early to mid-20th century, as she discovers her identity, s*xuality, and voice in the world. The production, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, and a book by Marsha Norman, starred LaChanze and Brandon Victor Dixon. It received eleven Tony noms with LaChanze winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. In 2015, "The Color Purple" was revived on Broadway, winning two Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Cynthia Erivo. This December, the film adaptation of the musical will be released, starring Fantasia Taylor, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo.
