We create long-term marketing plans called Total Tuneups, coach artists through the new music business, handle social media posting and we have been running music PR campaigns since 1996 for independent artists

"That's not a career. That's a fantasy. A buzz-driven fantasy."

The loop most independent artists are stuck in: release music, pay Meta, run the ads, drive people to Spotify. Then pay Meta again. And again. And again.

It's a slot machine. You keep feeding it hoping someone falls in love with you and finds their way to your DMs. Most of the time, nobody does.

Meanwhile you've spent thousands and you still can't name a single fan or reach one directly.

The alternative isn't complicated. It's just slower: build something you own. An email list. A phone number. A group. Somewhere a real person can reply to you.

Anyone else been stuck in this one?

Even if you don't have millions of people in your aura to capture, remember this.

People are always asking, in their minds: what's in it for me? In marketing speak, that's the WIIFM.

When someone lands on your social media or your website, there's a little tape running in the back of their brain asking exactly that. Most artists never answer it, and that's the whole reason people scroll past.

Here's what we realized: very few artists have more than one capture bucket set up. Most have none. So take the reality check.

Your social media does not equal fan ownership, that's renting from Zuck. Your Spotify has nothing to do with gathering true fans. Yes, you get the analytics. But the ownership belongs to Ek.

And then we spend huge amounts of money in buzz marketing danger loops. Buying Meta ads to send people to Spotify... and at the end of it, you own nothing.
How many capture buckets do you actually have?

Asking for an email address without an offer says: give me your email so I can send you more email. Nobody wants that. Enter the big fat juicy bribe.

Warmly invite instead. I won't spam you, I won't sell your info, and you're coming on the journey with me as I hit the road and record this next record.

Then put something behind it that auto-delivers the moment they sign up: a special video, a bundle of tracks, a PDF, a piece of art you designed. Anything goes.

The point is to answer "what's in it for me" and build the bribe for your ideal fan, not everyone.

Four more capture buckets (and the last one surprises people).

4. Pre-save capture. I've been rethinking and repositioning pre-saves on my blog recently. Honestly, I don't think they hold as much value as they used to. But a forever pre-save — where a fan saves your next track and is then pre-saving everything you release from now into the future... that's absolutely worth your while.

5. Real world / IRL capture. A listening party. A show you're playing. Do you have QR codes everywhere? Do you have clipboards? When someone walks up to the merch table to buy something or just to talk, are you capturing as much of their detail as possible?

6. SMS capture. A text message list... or even a WhatsApp group, if that's right for your brand.

7. Physical address capture. I know this one sounds old school. But if you've got something small and inexpensive to give away (a sticker, a beer koozie), ask your fans for their address. Mail them a couple of stickers and a little love note. Suddenly you know where your fans actually are, and you've made a real impression.

If it were pouring rain and you were desperately thirsty, would you set out just one tiny cup? Of course not. You'd grab every bucket, bowl and container you could get your hands on and spread them out everywhere to catch all the rain that's falling.

That's exactly how to think about capture buckets:
⚡ Email capture on your website
⚡ An exclusive offer: a behind-the-scenes video, a cool download, an unreleased track nobody's heard
⚡Social media capture: where you actually ask people to follow you on a specific channel

Attention is not the goal. Ownership is.

While writing Buzz to Bond, I kept seeing the same thing: artists spending an inordinate amount of time, money and energy on Spotify playlisting, chasing TikTok virality and growing social numbers (and still not able to fill a room with 30 people 5 miles outside their hometown).

Something was clearly broken. So I started reverse-engineering what was missing. One of the biggest missing pieces: email capture. Capture buckets exist for one reason. To get as much ownership of your audience as possible.
