Please join me for a Truth Values Community event, Thurs April 14th at noon, for a fun conversation with performer, playwright, and "recovering mathematician" Gioia De Cari as we talk about walking between the worlds of art + math! She might pry some answers out of me about about what sent me along the path of combining art and math, while we view some of my related work. This is a live Truth Values Community online event free for members. To join go to https://truthvalues.org/join-us and click “Join Free." Info also on my website, www.skypape.com

Donate - Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation

Greetings! Most of you in my circle of friends are art lovers and artists, so I need not explain how hard hit our creative community has been this year. If you plan to do some year-end giving, please consider this Foundation you may not know. The Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation has been funding individual artists for 38 years. A contribution of *any* amount would make a difference. Every dollar will go directly to the artists as unrestricted grants, providing financial support and recognition that gives artists both the means & encouragement to continue their work. Here's the link http://chenvenfoundation.org/donate/
Buying art may be beyond the budget, but this is one excellent way to support the work of artists and foster a greater appreciation for the arts. With warmth and glad tidings to one and all.

2020 marks 38 years of grant-making by the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded grants to over 200 artists. Our success would not have been possible without the contributions, large and small, of individuals and organizations who value the arts. Artists...

Amanda Palmer reads "The Mushroom Hunters" by Neil Gaiman

So many of my favorite things, rolled into one - art, science, poetry, and fungi. An extraordinary evening, "The Universe in Verse," organized by Maria Popova of Brain Pickings, had as its finale a reading of Neil Gaiman's new poem, "The Mushroom Hunters," delivered so expressively by his wife, Amanda Palmer. https://soundcloud.com/brainpicker/the-mushroom-hunters

THE MUSHROOM HUNTERS, by Neil Gaiman

Science, as you know, my little one, is the study
of the nature and behaviour of the universe.
It’s based on observation, on experiment, and measurement,
and the formulation of laws to describe the facts revealed.

In the old times, they say, the men came already fitted with brains
designed to follow flesh-beasts at a run,
to hurdle blindly into the unknown,
and then to find their way back home when lost
with a slain antelope to carry between them.
Or, on bad hunting days, nothing.

The women, who did not need to run down prey,
had brains that spotted landmarks and made paths between them
left at the thorn bush and across the scree
and look down in the bole of the half-fallen tree,
because sometimes there are mushrooms.

Before the flint club, or flint butcher’s tools,
The first tool of all was a sling for the baby
to keep our hands free
and something to put the berries and the mushrooms in,
the roots and the good leaves, the seeds and the crawlers.
Then a flint pestle to smash, to crush, to grind or break.

And sometimes men chased the beasts
into the deep woods,
and never came back.

Some mushrooms will kill you,
while some will show you gods
and some will feed the hunger in our bellies. Identify.
Others will kill us if we eat them raw,
and kill us again if we cook them once,
but if we boil them up in spring water, and pour the water away,
and then boil them once more, and pour the water away,
only then can we eat them safely. Observe.

Observe childbirth, measure the swell of bellies and the shape of breasts,
and through experience discover how to bring babies safely into the world.

Observe everything.

And the mushroom hunters walk the ways they walk
and watch the world, and see what they observe.
And some of them would thrive and lick their lips,
While others clutched their stomachs and expired.
So laws are made and handed down on what is safe. Formulate.

The tools we make to build our lives:
our clothes, our food, our path home…
all these things we base on observation,
on experiment, on measurement, on truth.

And science, you remember, is the study
of the nature and behaviour of the universe,
based on observation, experiment, and measurement,
and the formulation of laws to describe these facts.

The race continues. An early scientist
drew beasts upon the walls of caves
to show her children, now all fat on mushrooms
and on berries, what would be safe to hunt.
The men go running on after beasts.

The scientists walk more slowly, over to the brow of the hill
and down to the water’s edge and past the place where the red clay runs.
They are carrying their babies in the slings they made,
freeing their hands to pick the mushrooms.

Informative and artful, W.E.B Du Bois' exhibion in 1900, including these works and more, “...provided Du Bois with an important opportunity to not only advance the sociological study of blacks, but to begin to bring into focus the intellectual and social accomplishments of black Americans, as well as their social, cultural, and political experience.” (from Hyperallergic.com http://hyperallergic.com/306559/w-e-b-du-boiss-modernist-data-visualizations-of-black-life/ ) http://publicdomainreview.org/collections/w-e-b-du-bois-hand-drawn-infographics-of-african-american-life-1900/

Visually dazzling set of hand-drawn charts created by Du Bois, condensing an enormous amount of data on African-American life into aesthetically daring and easily digestible visualisations.

Because there are things to celebrate, let's honor the date of Paul Klee's birth. Talented in many realms, not just visual art, here are a few of his well-chosen words:

"I paint in order not to cry."

"One eye sees, the other feels."

"Art does not reflect what is seen, rather it makes the hidden visible."

Retired Doctor Unearths Lost Da Vinci Drawing Worth $16 Million

"It’s an auctioneer’s jackpot dream. A man opens a portfolio of drawings, and there, mixed in with the jumble of routine low-value items, is a long-lost work by Leonardo da Vinci. And that, more or less, is what happened to Thaddée Prate, director of old master pictures at the Tajan auction house" [NY Times 12/11/16]

The back of the drawing reveals notes that were written from right to left, as Leonardo was known to do.
