William A. Brown is considered America’s first-known Black playwright. Brown’s most notable play is called “The Drama of King Shotaway” (1823). The play is based on the life of Black Carib leader Joseph Chatoyer and his revolt against British rule.
.
In 1816 Brown opened the African Grove Theatre—the first resident all-Black theater company—that catered to the free Blacks in lower Manhattan. They produced and performed Shakespearean works, popular plays, ballets, operas, and Brown’s own plays. When the nearby Park Theatre and local sheriff forced the African Theatre to close down, Brown continued to perform outdoors. He even allowed white audience members to attend, though they had to sit in the back because, “Whites do not know how to conduct themselves at the entertainments of ladies and gentlemen of Color." The last performance of the African Grove Theatre was in 1824, and Brown passed away in 1884. #aareg #africanamericanregistry #blackhistorymonth

We had such a great day in the new Tow Performing Arts Center.
On Thursday, our Department of Theater celebrated their partnership with The Public Theater and The Tow Foundation, with an Open House at the new Leonard and Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts.
The afternoon included a series of Master Classes for students, a reception, and an encore performance of Bring A Weasel and A Pint of Your Own Blood Festival '18, which just wrapped up its run at The Public last week.
We're thrilled to have our Tow Center opening to all soon!
