William A. Brown is considered America’s first-known Black playwright. Brown’s most notable play is called “The Drama of King Shotaway” (1823). The play is based on the life of Black Carib leader Joseph Chatoyer and his revolt against British rule.
.
In 1816 Brown opened the African Grove Theatre—the first resident all-Black theater company—that catered to the free Blacks in lower Manhattan. They produced and performed Shakespearean works, popular plays, ballets, operas, and Brown’s own plays. When the nearby Park Theatre and local sheriff forced the African Theatre to close down, Brown continued to perform outdoors. He even allowed white audience members to attend, though they had to sit in the back because, “Whites do not know how to conduct themselves at the entertainments of ladies and gentlemen of Color." The last performance of the African Grove Theatre was in 1824, and Brown passed away in 1884. #aareg #africanamericanregistry #blackhistorymonth

We had such a great day in the new Tow Performing Arts Center.

On Thursday, our Department of Theater celebrated their partnership with The Public Theater and The Tow Foundation, with an Open House at the new Leonard and Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts.

The afternoon included a series of Master Classes for students, a reception, and an encore performance of Bring A Weasel and A Pint of Your Own Blood Festival '18, which just wrapped up its run at The Public last week.

We're thrilled to have our Tow Center opening to all soon!

Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Moors ....BRAVO. Grateful for a night of Theater rather than binge watching Breaking Bad...You guys are better than Blue Ice. 8-)
Hello all. Roger here, MFA Actor '08. I'm directing a ZOOM recording of select scenes from an award-winning screenplay. The scenes will be used as part of a pitch deck for funding. 1-2 rehearsals, shoot day. Stipend included. Searching for the role of SAM (35 - 40) Puerto Rican, dreamboat. The writer feels passionately about giving this role to a q***r, gay or bi actor. If this is you, or have a suggestion, please DM me.
Greetings! My name is Connor Whelan. I am a current student at Brooklyn College, and I am very interested in joining one of the plays this year. The thing is I’m not a theatre major but a BA in music composition. Maybe I could join as an extra curricular because I’m only taking 5 credits this semester. Are there auditions going on at this time, or have they passed? If so, then for the fall? I’m interested in doing some acting this year. Thanks
Hello my fellow Brooklyn College students. My name is Eric, I'm a film production major and I’m looking for three actors and no less than two extras to be in my short comedy film. There’s no dialog so the plot and story of the film revolve around the action and acting. The film is very short, about 7 minutes, so shooting will not require a ton of time. Shooting will be on Saturday November 24th or Sunday 25th. But I am willing to postpone the shooting date to Friday 30th or Saturday December 1st. Shooting time between 12pm and 6:30pm, all will depend on everyone’s schedule. Since there's no dialog, rehearsals or not necessary as the acting is basic and pretty straight forward. But if those who are interested would like to meet up before the shoot, we could arrang something. please contact me for more details on the film or for any questions regarding production expectations. and please email a photo of yourself if possible. Phone: 917-628-3472 Email: [email protected]
Looking for an art director and Carpenter for a thesis film with Brooklyn College's Feirstein Graduate School of cinema. Our film is 1990s sci-fi- q***r identity story. Our locations are Steiner Studios, Warehouse in LIC that has numerous NYC shows filming at and a bar in Brooklyn. We do need to have two sets built at our Steiner studios location. Would love to find someone who is interested in doing such work. Shoot dates are November 14th to the 18th. Our budget is limited but we can pay a small fee. If interested, please contact me at [email protected]
