In this week’s virtual workshop, we’re exploring rituals, their structures, meanings and how we might amplify or interrupt them with poetic devices.

Ritual can occur at the site of the body or as a container for community connection or even as a habit of the state. We might call ritual a type of social form for human beings. Ritual, like poetry, inherently lends itself to pattern and repetition.

How does ritual show up in an ode poem? How to write the consequences of violence as ritual?

Looking at poems by R.A. Villanueva, Angel Nafis, Tanaya Winder, Lucille Clifton and more, we’ll also examine the practice of “deep reading” a text as ritual.

25 years later, we remember ❤️

Today marks a quarter century since September 11th, 2001. A day of unimaginable loss that forever changed New York City and the world.

We honor the lives taken, the families and communities forever altered, the first responders and workers who carried the weight of that day and its aftermath, and all those whose stories remain with us.

On this anniversary, we turn to poetry as a way of witnessing what can never be fully expressed.

May their memories endure forever 🕊️

A glimpse behind the mask 🎭 Last year’s Masquerade Ball was pure magic ✨

This October 3rd, we return to Pen + Brush for our 4th Annual Masquerade Ball: Bacchanalia — a night inspired by Dionysian revelry and dedicated to raising funds for poetry 🍷🍇🏛️

Expect tarot readings, astrology, dream interpretations, personalized typewriter poems, performances from acclaimed poets, drag artists, and burlesque dancers, plus interactive installations throughout the night!

There will also be live + silent auctions, an open bar, and a grazing table — all in support of our mission to make poetry more accessible, inclusive, and alive in our communities.

Funds raised help us keep events free to attend, provide scholarships for workshops, and pay working artists directly for their work.

So find your mask, gather your fellow revelers, and join us for one ecstatic night of poetry, art, pleasure, and radical joy 🥂

What can poetry do in the face of disappointment, uncertainty, and a world that asks us not to look away?

Over six weeks, we’ll explore poetry as an act of persistence: writing that confronts what is broken while still making room for possibility, imagination, and hope.

Join us for Hope Punk Poetry with Zoë Luh (Zoë 陆) on Wednesdays from September 16 - October 21

September’s Free Verse for Immigrant Writers explores poetic exercises that I hope can help us find our way through experiences of dislocation, confusion and uprootedness.

Using June Jordan’s and Mahmoud Darwish’s poems as models and inspiration, we will write texts that situate us in time and space as we look at, record and aim to archive our experience of this ongoing crisis.

Situating ourselves in relation to grief and loss, we will finish by turning to a collective utterance reminding us of the ways we remain held and guided by one another.

What makes a poem unforgettable? The turn. That sharp pivot, emotional swerve, or unexpected insight that takes the reader somewhere brand new.

Join us this Thursday (9/10) for a high-energy, hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to craft bold, surprising turns that spark momentum, deepen meaning, and keep readers breathless for what’s next.

Through close reads of work by Andrea Cohen, Ada Limón, Molly Braddock, we’ll explore how contrast, risk, and revelation build poems that crackle with urgency. You’ll leave not only with two fresh drafts, but with powerful tools to transform your poems through the art of the volta.

In this workshop, you’ll:
• Harness the volta to create tension and surprise
• Use form, contrast, and momentum to shape unforgettable poems
• Learn strategic techniques to amplify emotional impact
• Leave with two bold, in-progress poems—and the skills to keep going
