Francisco Goya is extraordinary. A beacon of light enveloped in a thick shadow that reveals the ironies, horrors, and humanity of the humiliated, the forsaken, the corrupt, and the abused. He illuminates the absurdity of human reason and logic, and the absurdity of human abuse and its effects. The silent screams of his art are deafening. This week marks his 275th birthday.

Here is a short film we've made attempting to adapt one of his paintings, from his Disparate series of dreams and nightmares.

To view the entire film, please check out our website at nocheflamenca.com

This short is the first in a series of works based on Goya that we will be developing and presenting. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard on this project. We would love to hear your comments. Please email us at [email protected]

We are excited to share the first of a series of short films we're creating leading up to our run at the Joyce in April.

"Rosinkalech" was the first film piece Noche Flamenca set out to create during Covid-19. At the onset of the pandemic, I had the luxury of time to listen to music amongst many other things. One morning I was listening to Yiddish music and I came upon a song titled “Rozhinkes mit Mandlen” (Raisins and Almonds). There are many versions of the song, and after listening to different interpretations something specific about the song struck me – a sense of longing, and care, and warmth. The song is a Jewish lullaby written and composed by the wonderful Yiddish poet, Avrum Goldnfoden.

I began to work with the guitarists in the company to create our version and called filmmaker Jesse Rodkin (who we have been working with for the last few years). Jesse and I decided that although we are a flamenco dance and music company, the piece must use the language of film if I were to do it during the lockdown.

The artists were instructed to choreograph their own personal interpretation of the music. Due to the limitations during the lockdown each artist was left to film themselves. I gave them each a specific map of movement but they had to choose what resonated with them emotionally with this piece of music during the shutdown.

This project allowed us all to communicate in that moment of isolation.

We used flamenco, hip-hop, classic Yiddish music and poetry, and film – with artist from many places in Spain, to New York, to San Francisco, to France. It was truly a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultured adventure that allowed us all to commune.

There will be more film work to come as we approach our first run of live performances in over two years!

Happy Holidays to our Noche Flamenca Family!

We wanted to share the fruits of our work, created throughout 2020-2021, as we look forward to welcoming you back to our live performances in the new year.

This video compilation, mixed and edited over a number of months, demonstrates how the company’s mood has shifted throughout the course of the pandemic. The silver lining for us has been experiencing a new lens through which to view and express our lives and that of all humanity. It provided an awakening of sorts as certain things could no longer be ignored. And it gave us the gift of time, to watch, to see, to think, perhaps more clearly and urgently than ever before.

The film will release on Eventbrite on December 27th, check it out below:

We wish you peace and good health in these uncertain times and we wish you all a new beginning in 2022!

Un abrazo
Martín & Soledad
Some kind words from our dear friend, Wendy Vanden Heuvel:

"As John Cage says, “When you start working, everybody is in your studio- the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas- all are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then, if you are lucky, even you leave.”

Soledad Barrio has devoted herself so thoroughly to the art of flamenco dance that all you see is the dance, all you see is the line, the spirit, the rhythm. She is extra extra ordinary and at the same time completely humble. She enters the studio each day to start again- to practice. She is poetry, fire, and silence in one motion. She is the work.

Ole! Sole! you are most deserving of this prize"

We are thrilled to announce that Soledad Barrio has been awarded the prestigious 2022 Vilcek Prize in Dance. Congratulations Soledad!

"Soledad Barrio receives the Vilcek Prize in Dance for her commitment to the growth and evolution of the genre of flamenco through her artistic leadership and instruction with Noche Flamenca, and for the creative vision and technical mastery she brings to her performances."
