American Theatre of Actors

American Theatre of Actors American Theatre of Actors (ATA) was founded in 1978 by JAMES JENNINGS. It is one of the longest running Off-Off-Broadway theatre companies in New York City.
(51)

The Company’s purpose has been to promote the development of new playwrights, directors and actors and provide them a creative atmosphere in which to work without the pressures of commercial theatre. After 35 years, American Theatre of Actors has made an indelible mark on the NY stage: having produced over 900 new plays and given opportunities to over 10,000 actors. The Company is known warmly in

the field as a ‘rite of passage’ for up and coming actors, directors and playwrights. ATA’s Special Programs:

• Director's Festival: 6-8 new directors are given a chance to direct a dramatic or comedic play of a naturalistic format.

• Playwright's Festival: 6-8 new playwrights are given a chance at having their play produced at ATA. We only accept dramas or comedies of a naturalistic format.

• The Classics: Each season we produce 3-5 Shakespeare and/or Greek classics to compliment the training of our Actors and Directors. President: James Jennings

Seth Bisen-Hersh and R.C. Staab’s new musical THE DIAMOND AS BIG AS THE RITZ, directed by John Hickok, is now playing through September 29 at the American Theatre of Actors.

Set to catchy melodies that hark back to the golden age of Broadway, the musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s comic novella is told through a framing device of a young couple seeking to immigrate to the United States today. The couple puzzles over Fitzgerald’s deliberate satire involving impossibly wealthy Americans and Fitzgerald’s cavalier treatment of race issues. As the story moves back and forth from present day to the 1920s, the story takes on added comic satire and an edgy, engrossing perspective.
