During the 2022-2023 school year, we delivered around 4K programs to over 105K students, including 600 free programs! 30% of the schools within walking distance of our parks participated. The teachers reported that their students gained an improved understanding of science and connection to conservation. We’re proud to inspire future conservationists! Many birds seem to love to bathe, including this elegant, marbled teal! Bathing is thought to play an important role in feather maintenance, which makes sense when you consider how vital a bird’s feathers are for insulation, waterproofing, and flight. You can see the marble teal in the Aquatic Bird House.

This we’re excited to announce that young chuckwallas have recently hatched after 88 days of incubation! These desert-dwelling lizards are found in the western United States and Mexico, and tend to inhabit rocky outcroppings that allow them to bask, but also retreat into rock crevices for safety. Look for the new arrivals on exhibit in the World of Reptiles nursery! 📸Keeper Micah

Keeper Kelly recently captured this clip of a 4-5-week-old rufous giant elephant shrew pup nursing. Elephant shrew pups can see and hear almost immediately after birth, and can run and jump within a few hours! The pups always flip onto their backs to nurse, and are usually fairly vigorous in their feeding.

Have you visited the squirrel monkeys this summer at their summer habitat on Monkey Island in the Children’s Zoo?

The Guianan (common) squirrel monkeys at the zoo are endemic to forests in northern South America. Their tails are non-prehensile, meaning they can’t be used to grab things but are instead used for balance. With their large brain to body-size ratio, they are considered to be very intelligent. We hope you can swing by soon to see them! 📸Keeper Sky

Have you been wondering about the bags you see attached to trees throughout the zoo? They’re spotted lanternfly traps. Lanternflies were accidentally introduced to the US. Although not directly dangerous to people, they can harm local trees and food plants.

To help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly, we use nets that direct these pests into specifically designed traps. This eradication work is more environmentally friendly than using insecticides.

What does a zookeeper do? Pretty much everything!

Working with animals requires knowledge, skill, creativity, dedication and complex problem solving, so zookeeping is an art and a science combined! A keeper’s day can include cleaning, food preparation and feeding, training, enrichment, guest engagement and education, and much more. Most animal care professionals have bachelor degrees or higher and many began their awesome STEM career as a volunteer or intern at their local zoo or aquarium.

If you’re interested in becoming a zookeeper, you can learn more about the internships available at the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and New York Aquarium here: https://bit.ly/44VAjpl. Visit the American Association of Zoo Keepers website for more information and resources: https://bit.ly/3Q4P4lx.

Sloths spend most of their time hanging upside down in the treetops of Central and South America. Their long limbs and curved claws help them grip tightly onto branches. Sloths have slow metabolisms and need to be efficient with their energy use, which is why they tend to move slowly. We hope you can take some time this summer to hang with our two-toed sloth in the Children’s Zoo.

Have you ever watched a flock of flamingos, and wondered what they’re up to? Our Curator of Ornithology, Chuck, shared some tips about flamingo behavior that you can see in this video!

🦩When the birds have their heads held upside down in the water while pumping their feet up and down in a tight circle, they’re feeding. Flamingos have a bill that’s specially adapted for filter-feeding. Stamping their webbed feet disturbs substrate and allows the birds to filter tiny organisms out of the water for food!

🦩Neck swaying communicates to another flamingo, “you’re getting too close.”

🦩 Flamingos often rest by standing on one leg and tucking their head into their feathers. While this pose is tricky for humans, it helps the birds conserve energy.

During a recent sea lion feeding and training session, our animal care team worked on crate training behavior with Buoy. All our sea lions are trained to be comfortable in a crate so we can transport them when needed. Entering the crate and holding still so the crate door can be safely closed, are just a few of the behaviors the sea lions learn. Positive reinforcement from keepers, including lots of fish, makes "crating" a rewarding experience for the animals! On your next visit, be sure to stop by the sea lion feeding session at 3:00 PM on Astor Court.

Two of our king cobras successfully mated back in March and we’re excited to announce that the female recently laid eggs. King cobras lay between 21 and 40 white, leathery eggs at a time. Keeper Micah checks on their development by candling them — holding a light near the egg to see inside and check on their growth. The eggs will take 60-80 days to incubate. We’ll keep you posted on their progress!

Just watching the Zoo, how is Ernie.
Large zoo animals have caught the coronavirus from keepers. Is there any evidence that small animals caught it?
Well, I had an invasion of Palmetto bugs, Florida roaches. Can't say I love them but they ertainly kow how to get around. They can flatten themselves to 1/16 of an inch and wiggle into a transformer position to crawl through incredible spaces,i.e. :the electrical outlets, the baseboards, the water pipes.

Gtting into my coffee canister was a little too much. I hope the crows are finding all the larva or roaches they can. End of a love affair for me which never really started.
One of your lizards from a couple years ago
I have never had the opportunity to ever visit a zoo in my lifetime and I am pushing 60, but I love watching your television show! I feel like a young child at heart being educated and thrilled at the same time! Thank you for caring and thanks to all the workers ❤
Hi, when will the children's zoo open again? We have been there twice in the last month and twice we found it close
Dear Caretakers: I was planning on paying a visit during my vacation from work this past year, but because of Covid-19, I was unable to. I would like to thank you for showing how well cared for each and every species of wildlife is cared for and then returned to the wild. Your love for them touches my heart with so much joy and happiness to see them, not only cared for at the Zoo, but also as they are being returned to their natural habitats. God Bless you all for your wonderful work😊😊😊
Does anyone remember what Tundra the polar bear's mom's name was?
Stephen Spencook 1959. A wonderful man who took me behind the scenes a few times to meet the reptiles.
