Mughal Dynasty. Shah Jahan. AH1037-1068, 1628-1658 AD. AR Rupee (24.7 mm, 11.43 g, 3 h). Junagarh mint, AH1071 (posthumous issue). KM 235.12. EF, Complete mint name. Extremely Rare.

Shah Jahan was deposed on 17 Ramadan AH 1068 (8 June 1658) and confined in prison, where he remained until his death eight years later. Following his deposition, three of his sons contested the throne: Murad Bakhsh, who was arrested and deposed within weeks; Shah Shuja, who resisted for several months before being defeated; and Aurangzeb, who ultimately secured power and formally ascended the throne on 21 July 1658. In Junagadh, however, the local governors did not acknowledge Aurangzeb?s authority until late in AH 1071. As a result, the mint there appears to have continued issuing coins in Shah Jahan?s name until some point in 1071, as demonstrated by this specimen. From that year onward, rupees were struck at Junagadh in Aurangzeb?s name, though they preserved a distinctive local style until the 31st year of his reign, after which the mint adopted the standard designs of Aurangzeb?s coinage.

The last example of this type that Stephen Album sold realized $2100 (see Album Auction 19, lot 1033, 15 May 2014).

I am excited to announce that Agora Auctions is moving to a regular monthly schedule! From now on, our auctions will close on the last Tuesday of every month, with the next sale opening the following Thursday. This brings consistency and predictability to your collecting experience-and gives us the chance to serve you better, month after month. This was always my intention, but immediately after I took over, the pandemic hit, and we all know how that went.

To kick things off, Sale 115 is now live, and it’s one of our Bronze Sales.

What makes a Bronze Sale special?
Our Bronze Sales are designed to be budget-friendly. Coins are more affordable (but still interesting), cataloguing is minimal, and every lot starts at just $5-with no reserves.

Sale 115 features 642 lots of ancient, medieval, and world coins, with a wide variety of Celtic, Roman, and Greek types, offering great value and opportunities to explore new areas of collecting.
Plus, we’ve made improvements to the auction platform-including live bidding during the close-making the experience smoother and more exciting, and many changes to our back-end to improve the overall experience and service.

We’re thrilled about the direction we’re heading and hope you’ll join us for this new chapter of consistent, well-curated monthly auctions.

Best,
Alfred

Our 114th sale starts to close in a few hours and has several extreme rarities as well as some interesting Greek, Roman, Medieval and world coins. Oh, let’s not forget we have a nice selection of antiquities in this sale!

Have a look at the coin of Constantine the Great with a staurogram! A symbol of 4th Century Christianity which is exceptionally rare on ancient coins!

As many of you know Agora used to offer world, United States and Confederate currency (paper money). Well, we are in the process of negotiating a deal with a world currency dealer to manage world currency listings at Agora again! We hope to start listing currency in every sale in the very near future.
