MODERN FINERY / I begin with a panel of pure organic silk, which is then bathed in minerals and plant dyes, then botanically contact-printed with an assortment of fresh leaves & flowers through an alchemical steaming process.

I just had a rush of nostalgia when my phone shared “on this day” eight years ago. I’m often wondering, am I on the right path as an artist & designer? Over the years, I’ve had immense fun, yet sometimes the demand (and what sells) determines the direction that you bring your work in and you can get lost in that.
Recently, I’ve been looking back to my early work as a source of inspiration, a time when it was completely experimental, playful, authentic— created simply to make something beautiful. I look forward to calling in that part of myself and excited to share what comes of this new direction!

There’s something deeply moving about rediscovering practices from the past and finding their place in our lives today.

Natural dying is one of those practices. Looking at how earlier cultures cultivated plants for color, medicine, and cleaning offers more than a glimpse into history. it gives us another way of thinking about how we use the resources around us.

My visit to the Medieval Art and The Cloisters at The Met reminded me that sometimes moving forward means looking back. There is so much wisdom, beauty, and possibility, and these older ways of working – and so much we can carry forward as we create more consciously today.

Perhaps the future of natural color is, and part, a return to the past. ✨🌿🌾🥀

what’s growing in my dye garden: marigolds 🌼 although we’ve moved back to Brooklyn for the school year, the growing season remains abundant on my front stoop! These marigolds will last through October, providing vibrant burst of orange and yellow.

The “secret” to eco printing… is that it’s a gorgeous alchemical process to lose yourself in. But there are a few tips to get started:
Scour ✓
Mordant ✓
Reliable plants ✓
Low moisture ✓
Compression ✓
Bundle ✓
Steam ✓
And then…
LET NATURE DO HER THING. 🌿
