It all started 35 years ago! Now we're celebrating those years at the Joyce Theater with the New York premiere of Somewhere and the revival of Rise. Buy your tickets now for May 31-June 5! The Santa Barbara Independent described Somewhere as "Filled with the most sublime invention, Somewhere seems destined to become a classic work of contemporary dance." For Doug, Somewhere is where his love of both musical theater and contemporary dance finally collides. The Bernstein Foundation gave us permission to use the orchestral score from West Side Story and strip it of its narrative, which meant we could create a dance without having to worry about what happens to Tony, Maria, the Jets or the Sharks. Of course, the score is brimming with nuance and emotional resonance and we made a dance matches that in choreographic vibrancy every inch of the way.
