The Santa Barbara Independent described Somewhere as "Filled with the most sublime invention, Somewhere seems destined to become a classic work of contemporary dance." For Doug, Somewhere is where his love of both musical theater and contemporary dance finally collides. The Bernstein Foundation gave us permission to use the orchestral score from West Side Story and strip it of its narrative, which meant we could create a dance without having to worry about what happens to Tony, Maria, the Jets or the Sharks. Of course, the score is brimming with nuance and emotional resonance and we made a dance matches that in choreographic vibrancy every inch of the way.

The dancers begin far away from center, but have jagged movements to bring them into a clump on center. The group rotates in various ways and trickle out to find another grouping on stage left.

Come see the company perform ‘Rise’. This piece was created in 1993 and set to composer John Adam’s ‘Fearful Symmetries’.
“In many ways it was a groundbreaking piece for me because it set the standard for every dance that followed. This piece has had many dancers move through it and the last time this piece was performed onstage was 2012! The current company dances this to the hilt and brings brand new life to it.” - Doug
