“1088 en 10” | 8.5 x 8.5 x 2 inches | Mixed media sculpture

The title “1088 in 10” references the amount of sanctions imposed to Venezuela by the United States over the course of approximately 10 years. These arbitrary sanctions have caused devastating, widespread damage to the nation.

Key impacts include:
▪️98% of national income, losses exceeding $232 billion over the years due to restricted oil sales and blocked access to the global financial system
▪️Restriction of PDVSA (Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A.) oil export and its ability to receive payment, which crippled the oil industry, Venezuela’s primary income.
▪️Humanitarian impact and Shortages: restriction of food and medicine imports, causing severe shortages of basic necessities
▪️Impact on Infrastructure and Agriculture. For example, the lack of diesel fuel in the countryside causes agricultural machinery to stand still and disrupting food production

Venezuela Vuela Libre, is a national campaign and “pilgrimage” that serves as a movement and a public initiative to demand the removal of these sanctions in hopes for achieving economic sovereignty.

“Apacuana” | 18 inches | Acrylic, color pencils, and paper collage on wood

In 2018, the iconic lion statue at the entrance of Caracas was replaced with a monument honoring Apacuana, an indigenous leader of the Quiriquires people, who resisted Spanish colonization in 1577. This shift reflects Venezuela’s broader effort to reclaim its indigenous heritage, reinterpreting national symbols to move away from glorifying colonialism. In 2022, the introduction of Caracas’ new flag, seal, and anthem sparked debate—while some saw it as erasure, others, including myself, embraced it as a necessary reckoning with a history marked by genocide, slavery, and cultural suppression.

My piece, “Apacuana” draws inspiration from these changes, from having Apacuana’s statue in the center of the composition to incorporating elements like the red drapery, the Waraira Repano mountains (both echoing the new flag), and the resilient Caracara flower—a native plant once demonized and destroyed by colonizers, yet still thriving today.

“Apacuana” is on view at with Archie Raphulu Projects () in Booth R8 until May 10th.

The collage in this piece consists of several drawings I made broken into small pieces of all the active political parties’ logos in Venezuela. The scene depicted is of a family about to have a meal. The tray meant to contain food is spilling out the collage, with pieces cascading unto the table yet none of it filling any of the bowls — a metaphor to the constant bombardment of political propaganda we receive through the media that ultimately does not nourish any of us.

These artworks are part of a series of sculptures I make inspired by the artisanal houses sold as souvenirs to locals and tourists in Latin America. These tend to depict very colorful idealized house façades usually collected in multiple quantities and hung together in people's homes, forming a small-town installation in people's house walls. My sculptures break away from the "idealized" look by showing graffiti, protests, decay, and signs of pollution - how a populated area that has gone through ups and downs actually looks (from riots and protests to depicting daily life) while maintaining the traditional artisanal houses' small size format and wall-hanging feature. This series aims to break away from idealization and connect with the barrios and cityscapes reminiscent of the ones that I and many others grew up with.
