What does this election mean to you?

Write in the comments and I’ll write it on a post-it for you and put it here at the 14th st/6th avenue subway station on the 123/LFM lines. We’ll be here from 12-8pm today, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

With the NYC mayoral election coming to a close, I’m excited to be out for the next 3 days talking to people about why the election means something to them. Civic engagement and participation is a topic close to my heart and I hope everyone participates tomorrow! Come by and share your thoughts if you are in NYC.

We’ll be out from 2pm-8pm today at the usual spot at 6th Ave- 14th st on the 123 and LFM lines. .nyc will be set up too so come through if you want to have a conversation.

To anyone feeling uncertain about the future, I hope you can remember that there are so many wonderful and good people in the world. Someone in my last post commented “Why aren’t there more good people in the world?”. I don’t think the problem is a lack of good people, but a fixation on the bad. If it’s what you pay attention to and focus on it’s all you’ll see. While difficult, even for me, it’s important to see that goodness is abundant, and we’re all able to bring it to other people through our actions.

Yes, America is divided. Yes, the world feels primed for war. And yes, life is hard. While this context feels heavy and personal because we’re living at this moment, it’s always been this way. We’re just intellectually and emotionally bombarded because we have social media and news and we can experience almost anything that anyone is going through anywhere. The choice of what to do about that is individual but for me I think there is a clear path to enjoy humanity in a digital age. Hang out with friends. Do nice things for no reason. Be curious about others. Look for opportunities to help without being asked. Find joy in small things. And listen- to others and yourself.

Listening to people on the street has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, and if you are thinking about what you might do for yourself and your community I would start there. If any of this resonates with you, or you are feeling a pull to do something but are unsure where to start, reach out. We can figure it out together.

We’re doing Subway Therapy on Saturday Dec 14 from 12-4pm! We’ll set up at 149th-Grand Concourse in the Bronx. is one of the wonderful community leaders I mentioned we’d be working with over the next several months to bring Subway Therapy around NYC.

The pop-up will be shorter because new spaces are experiments and sometimes we get moved or have to relocate. Should that happen we’ll let everyone know and you can check back here for updates as things evolve.

In Tochi’s first message she mentioned her company provides residential & communal spaces for Black, Indigenous & People of Color (BIPOC), the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. She went on to say the bronx tends to be left out of things but part of their goal at soft(spaces) is to bring recognition to the beauty of the Bronx. We’re so excited to be a part of that vision.

Update on the notes and future volunteer opportunities:
We’re working on processing the notes and so we’ll have a small selection up on subwaytherapy.com. At some point in the near future we will invite volunteers to come get all the notes processed and photographed. Possibly on Dec 21 or Jan 4. We’ll have pizza and snacks and it will be so fun.

Today is the last day at 14th st/6th avenue but in the coming months we’re going to do pop-ups throughout New York. Many people have reached out from around New York, other states, and in other countries so we’ll keep it going! We’ve been talking with community leaders in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to plan pop-ups in different spots throughout New York over the next few months. Looks like we’ll be in the Bronx on Dec 14.

If you would like to do something like this, or bring Subway Therapy somewhere get in touch. I love to travel for the international day of happiness on March 20th, and it looks like I might be going to Barcelona!!!Find out more and see the digital archive of the notes at subwaytherapy.com.

Recently, I co-founded a 501(c)3 non-profit called Listening Lab that Subway Therapy is now part of! Our mission is to use the practice of listening to bring people together. We provide purposeful work for young New Yorkers, and design projects and programs that build community. If you would like to support this vital work, you can! Use the Donorbox link in bio to give a tax deductible donation or you can Venmo !
