Our fall artist trainings are underway!

Led by Long Term Artist Instructor Ms. Leigh, a group of teaching artists dove into the process of teaching painting across grade levels. As part of the training, artists visited the Studio Gallery at One East 53rd Street to explore our current exhibition, From Lines to Layers: Discoveries in Paint.

Artists took a close look at the student paintings on view and each selected a piece to recreate, using the experience to explore different approaches to painting and consider how students learn through the process.

From Lines to Layers: Discoveries in Paint is free and open to the public. Visit the Studio Gallery and get inspired. Learn more at studioinaschool.org.

"My painting Stages of Vulnerability explores how the self changes as we develop a friendship. There are many ways that a relationship changes as we get to know the other person and as we allow ourselves to make more mistakes and be more vulnerable. The three blue-toned self-portraits lay out the sequence of becoming closer with someone else. In the beginning, there’s composure but true friendship allows us to feel unrestrained."

This stunning artwork was created by 12th grader Gaia Orr of Brooklyn High School of the Arts, and was selected for P.S. Art 2026, an exhibition showcasing NYC student artwork currently on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York .

Studio in a School is proud to partner with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and New York City Public Schools to bring P.S. Art to life and to award all graduating seniors, including Gaia, with $1,000 toward their future art endeavors.

Today marks one year since the loss of our beloved founder, Agnes “Aggie” Gund.

Aggie believed deeply in the power of art to change lives, and that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, challenge, and possibility of making art.

As we approach five decades of Studio in a School, her vision continues to guide us: bringing meaningful visual arts experiences to generations of young people.

We remain profoundly grateful for Aggie’s leadership, generosity, friendship, and indomitable spirit. Her legacy lives on in every classroom, every studio, and every young person whose possibilities are expanded through art.

If you would like to honor Aggie’s memory with a gift to Studio in a School, please donate online here: loom.ly/Jm2cZeE.

It’s National Arts in Education Week, and we’re calling on all of you to make your voices heard by telling Congress that arts education can’t wait!

Studio believes every student deserves access to the transformative power of the arts. That belief has been at the heart of our work since our founding, and it continues to guide everything we do. Today, we stand with the Arts Action Fund to encourage you to join in urging Congress to fully fund the five federal arts education funding streams, maintain funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, and protect access to the arts for every student.

Take action and contact your representatives today: www.artsactionfund.org/arts-action-center
