For my Hart to Heart tomorrow, Thursday September 14th, I'm looking forward to a conversation with Dr. Tom Lauwers, founder and CEO of BirdBrain Technologies LLC. Tom will introduce Cube and Glow, hands-on manipulatives that combine with digital apps to make abstract math concrete for kids. Working with Cube and Glow provide kids with immediate feedback, a safe space to play and explore, and help children have “AHA!” moments of understanding and joy with abstract math. We'll talk about the research process that led to Cube and Glow, get a demo of the final product, and ask him what's next for his company, BirdBrain Technologies. Please join us, learn and ask Tom questions!
Tomorrow, in my Hart to Heart, I'll be speaking with my colleague Christian Nwigwe about how his work increases equity and access for underserved communities.
Christian Nwigwe, a serial entrepreneur, graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. In 2016 he founded Platinum Edge Tutoring and as President, he has been successfully working with a growing number of schools helping students get closer to their academic and post secondary dreams. A year ago he also became CEO of Creative Connections, a company that also supports students in defining aspirations and attaining their college & career dreams. In both roles, Christian leads a team of Program Managers/ Directors and Success Coaches to increase equity and access for communities that need it most. He works to provide youth with pathways so that they are adequately prepared to begin their lives with the necessary tools, and confidence to achieve their goals. Our talk tomorrow will be about understanding how to provide schools, teachers and students with the resources to help them meet their goals.

Chaim Goodman-Strauss has been fascinated by patterns and mathematical paradoxes for as long as he can remember. He attended a lecture about the mathematician Georg Cantor when he was 17 and says, "I was already doomed to be a mathematician, but that lecture sealed my fate." He became a mathematics writer and popularizer. From 2004 to 2012, in conjunction with KUAF 91.3 FM, the University of Arkansas NPR affiliate, he presented ”The Math Factor", a podcast website dealing with recreational mathematics. He will be sharing with us some of the projects he has built that visualizes mathematical concepts.

We will be speaking with Andy Davidson of FiCycle. Our talk will be about the need to equip students with a framework and the tools to make informed decisions about their financial life. Financial theory and financial concepts, which go well beyond budgeting and checkbooks, can help us make better decisions and rarely if ever is this addressed in High School math classes.
Andy is a financial innovator and leader in the development of financial research and analytics as well as the founder of Financial Life Cycle Education Corp (FiCycle) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring every student has access to knowledge of the financial concepts necessary to live a prosperous life and the math skills needed to grasp those concepts and put them into practice.

My Hart to Heart this week will be Friday, August 19th at 11:30 PM and we'll be discussing Teaching AI (artificial intelligence) to children. My speaker is Tim Cooper who resides in Toronto and teaches students from 5th - 12th grade at The York School. For over 20 years, Tim has taught computer science, design, and English. His educational mindset is student-centered, growth-oriented, and influenced by current ideas in maker education, project-based learning, constructivism, whole student development, and learner-centered design. Tim is a founder of MakerTO, a group of educators who create great materials and share them with other educators. He is also one of five authors of the new International Baccalaureate DP Computer Science curriculum. I am very lucky to have worked with Tim and to have him as my guest tomorrow.
This week's Hart to Heart will be on Friday, August 19th at 11:30 AM EST. Laura has Tim Cooper (Teacher and Educational Technology Master) on the show. They'll be discussing Teaching AI (artificial intelligence) to children. Join the LIVE by visiting our page at that time.

Twenty Things to Do with a Computer Forward 50 can inspire parents, educators, and aspiring teachers to make the world a better place for learning. In 1971, Solomon and Papert predicted 1:1 personal computing, the maker movement, the rise of computational thinking, children programming computers, robotic construction kits, computer science for all, and integrating computing across the curriculum. Gary's book situated the ideals of progressive education in a modern context. Papert and Solomon demonstrated how computing could be creative, humane, whimsical, childlike, and a way to learn “everything else,” even ideas on the frontier of mathematics and science. Fifty years later, we are still striving towards these ideals. Join us!

"Our kids experience 'hard fun' - they learn that things don’t just happen and that they have to work hard and problem-solve through a process. They learn how to problem-solve, deal with frustration and collaborate with others. Every child learns differently and our teachers adjusts to optimize learning. We know we're doing something right becuase of the high rate of referrals and returning children.” Laura Hart, Founder/CEO, Harvard Graduate School of Education (MA). M.I.T. LAB Collaborator.
