Introducing Buffalo, NY Based Artist Tom Makovitch !
Tom Makovitch (he/him, b. 1990) is an artist living and working in Buffalo, New York. As a way to tailor memories Makovitch's forms are transgured from the pressure of his collectors heart. His method layers familiar, often domestic, objects with repetitive acts which result in new overwrought objects. His iridescent colorful palette embodies the tension and conjunction between q***r and masculine identity. He was born and raised along the Southern Tier in Elmira, New York. From there he attended SUNY Fredonia and received his BFA in sculpture. Directly after, he pursued his MFA from University at Albany and graduated in 2015. After living and working for a number of years in Albany he relocated to Buffalo in 2021.
Statement:
Tom Makovitch’s forms are made from molds of collected objects, and the resulting sculptures are energetic and dynamic, but ambiguous at first glance. With further inspection familiar things reveal themselves; headless toy horses, thread spools, lego bricks, bullet cartridges and more. His method is folded with play as he allows himself to explore meaning while assembling objects. Makovitch combines these objects of play, war, and the ordinary together and lets their meaning soften and dissipate into vibrant, iridescent colorscapes.
