🎶 James Gaffigan speaks with Hugo Shirley for the October 2026 issue of Opera Magazine with Opera News!

The interview follows Gaffigan as he opens his tenure as Houston Grand Opera’s Music Director Designate, conducting Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah,” directed by Patricia Racette, this October. Also Music Director of Komische Oper Berlin, Gaffigan speaks about the mentors who have shaped him, his path from bassoonist to conductor, and why he refuses to play it safe with repertoire.

“All eyes will be on Gaffigan as he conducts his first mainstage production as Music Director Designate this October: Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, in a production directed by Patricia Racette. It’s a work that he sees as deeply woven into Houston’s rich legacy of performing American opera.”

“I’m very excited to be doing it, especially as an American in that company, because we should not be apologizing for great American music.”

As First One Through writes, “Jewish memory is not only something Jews mourn; it is something they dance to.” And dance they did — the audience filled the aisles.

Haydn’s Symphony No. 49, nicknamed “La Passione,” creates an emotional world of tension, darkness, and relentless energy. Written in F minor, “La Passione” is one of Haydn’s most dramatic works. The final movement, marked Presto, brings that intensity to a fast, relentless finish!

Here’s Christian Reif leading the Lakes Area Music Festival Orchestra
