Lehman College’s innovative Theatre & Dance Programs transform students into versatile, self-directed performing artists of the 21st century. Our liberal arts BA in Theatre & Dance and BFA in Multimedia Performing Arts challenge our students to develop the knowledge and skills as well as the conceptual, critical and creative perspectives necessary for a professional life in the performing arts. We
believe that true artists possess broad-based knowledge and skills in their disciplines as well as vision—the conceptual, critical and creative perspectives about themselves, the arts, and the world around them. We believe that theatre and dance artists must collaborate across disciplines and media and must produce their own creative work in order to succeed in the performing arts in the 21st century. That is, theatre and dance artists of the 21st century must perform, write, design, and produce for the stage as well as the related media of film and television. We believe that students must engage with the professional world of theatre and dance in New York City and direct their own careers within the performing arts. We believe that it is our responsibility as faculty and staff to provide our students with the academic courses, creative experiences, and mentorship needed to prepare them for a career in the performing arts profession.

Join us for an online screening with Q&A of Born With An Extra Rib, by stefa marin alarcon!

Born With An Extra Rib: The Film is a transdisciplinary opera featuring multimedia artist and composer stefa marin alarcon. Descended from the Emberá-Chamí people, stefa is a Colombian-American musician, born and raised in Queens, New York. Emerging from the questions behind their upcoming record Born With An Extra Rib, this experimental operatic film creates a structure for stefa to reclaim and return to their body. They will use video collage, live music, and ritual performance to ask their most pressing, embodied questions. Through the production, stefa invites the cast, creative team, and audience to engage in an emergent process of collective liberation.
Through live performance, STEFA* continued to explore their relationships to Mother/Earth as a q***r trans being. In living, fighting, and surviving the fascist, yt-cis-heteropatriarchical neo-colonial powers, STEFA* reveal the beauty and contradictions that emerge in the face of destruction and pain. With lush harmonics, spiraling loops, ancient ululations, somatic jazz, and rage-pop, they channel their ancestors and guides in their complex compositions towards revolution.
Email [email protected] with any questions.

Suneil Sanzgiri: Artist Talk + Screening
Tuesday, March 22nd @ 6pm on ZOOM (Online)
This lecture by artist and filmmaker Suneil Sanzgiri unpacks and explores questions and themes around decolonization, identity, diaspora, and cross-continental solidarity. Through his lens based practice, Sanzgiri’s experimental films and installations blend multiple layers of 16mm film, CG animation, desktop aesthetics, and archival manipulation to gesture to tensions, possibilities, and replications of what we find when we search for ourselves in the remnants of colonial histories. Sanzgiri will invite students to think through methodologies employed by various interpretations of “the essay film” and ultimately workshop with students ways of thinking that seek to produce a series of questions about their own work.
Please email Professor Monica Duncan via [email protected] for the Zoom meeting link.
