Red Bull Theater

Red Bull Theater Off-Broadway theater company specializing in plays of heightened language, with a unique focus on the This bold spirit is central to our identity.

RED BULL THEATER brings rarely seen classic plays to dynamic new life for contemporary audiences. Our work unites a respect for tradition with a modern sensibility.

RED BULL THEATER is named for the rowdy Jacobean playhouse that illegally performed plays in England during the years of Puritan rule, and was the first London theater to reopen after the Restoration. With the Jacobean plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries as our cornerstone, Red Bull Theater is New York City’s destination for dynamic performances of great plays that stand the test of time. The company also produces new works that are in conversation with the classics. RED BULL THEATER delights and engages the intellect and imagination of audiences. A home for artists, scholars and students, we strive to make our work accessible, diverse, and welcoming to all theatergoers. Educational as well as entertaining, our work keeps a rich and vital tradition thriving. RED BULL THEATER believes in the power of great classic stories and plays of heightened language to deepen our understanding of the human condition. We believe in the special ability of live theater to create unique, collective experiences. And we believe in the limitless capacity of classical theater to illuminate the events of our times.

At Red Bull Theater, we mourn the loss of Elizabeth Smith, a voice and speech coach of unparalleled talent and a cherished member of our artistic family.

Liz Smith’s profound influence on our field, particularly in the realm of classical theater, is immeasurable. Countless actors, directors, and others have been shaped by her guidance and work, and her contributions will continue to resonate in our theaters and on our stages for generations to come.

When I first contemplated starting a theater company in the early 2000s, Liz Smith was one of the first people I sought advice from. To my immense gratitude, she became an enthusiastic supporter and artistic adviser to Red Bull Theater from the very beginning until her passing. She collaborated on numerous shows, elevating each production with her unwavering precision and unyielding spirit of uplift. Even as she transitioned into retirement, she remained a steadfast and enthusiastic audience member and supporter.

Liz embodied the highest standards of artistic excellence. And she expected that we all could, would, and should rise to that level. I am fortunate to have been among the many who had the privilege of working with, learning from, and befriending Liz.

When I first started as an assistant director to Michael Kahn at the Shakespeare Theater in DC, I was among those who felt intimidated by her. However, as I worked with her more closely, first in DC and later as colleagues at Bard College with JoAnne Akalaitis, I discovered that beneath her ballet-master’s demeanor lay the kindest of people with the biggest heart. As I grew to know her better and collaborated with her as a director, I found her indispensable and would eagerly seek her involvement in every show I could.

Liz never hesitated to pose challenging questions with a wonderfully sharp sense of humor. She had an uncanny ability to extract the best from all of us. As we bid her farewell, we extend our deepest condolences to her long-time partner, Jean. May her memory be a blessing.
