Handspun yarn is twisted into yarn by hand using a spinning wheel or drop spindle rather than industrial machine. it’s about the imperfections that make it special, the warmth it brings, and the human connection. It’s one-of-a-kind yarn with a heartbeat.

Sharing a glimpse into my two-week journey through Japan. 🇯🇵✨

My textile explorations led me to Kurashiki, where I visited the historic Hashimaya—a former kimono merchant’s residence—for an exhibition of Ako Dantsu by Ako Gabbeh. To be honest, this was a world I didn’t know much about until a friend introduced me to its dedicated weavers.

What is Dantsu & Gabbeh?
Dantsu is a unique Japanese hand-woven rug. While influenced by Persian and Chinese techniques, it evolved into something uniquely Japanese—woven with cotton threads dyed in indigo and other natural plant-based colors.

Since the Meiji era, these luxurious rugs have been cherished by the Imperial Family and the elite, adorning tea houses and grand estates.

What fascinated me most was “Ako Gabbeh”—a modern evolution of this craft. By using the same traditional techniques but these weavers create beautiful “chair rugs” design, dyeing and weave. They fit perfectly on contemporary furniture, like Eames chairs, bringing a touch of Japanese soul into modern homes.

We are thrilled to announce that Loop of the Loom will be featuring Ako Gabbeh at this year’s New York Textile Month! Stay tuned as we bring the intricate beauty and soft texture of this Japanese craft to our studio.
