In 1958, our mother, Amelia Robin (a highly regarded designer of party centerpieces for Hollywood studios, starting with Disney) invented a new kind of holiday decoration: life-size, 3-D paper sculptures that could be assembled at home without scissors, staples, or glue. The first kit debuted in Family Circle Magazine and sold out in weeks. For the next 20 years, her kits were everywhere in America: women’s magazines, classrooms, libraries, and family homes—at one point, you could even buy them in supermarket checkout aisles.
