When putting together a speech, it's so important to remember the spark which ignited your passion.

You want to share that enthusiasm with your audience.

Every line has importance. Practice your speech in segments.

Take your time to passionately connect with what that segment is about.

If it helps, practice with a friend. Don’t hold back your enthusiasm. Don’t be afraid to go over the top. You can always pull it back.

Techniques like these are something I love to teach people.

Do you tend to speed up and rush?

You are not alone!

1. Take a long breath in and slowly release your breath out. Your exhalation is where your relaxation is!

2. Practice speaking slowly, even if it feels like slow motion.

3. Have the courage to pause. Change of rhythm will draw your audience’s attention to you.

Tend to rush? This is very common!

A few tips:

Say each sentence to a specific person. Really talk to them. Make sure they understand everything you're saying.

Pick your most important points and say less.

Finally, don't forget to breathe! This will also relax your voice.

Here’s a tip - imagine yourself in a big room. When you speak, make sure that the person in the back row can hear you.

You will need to get used to hearing your voice when you are speaking loudly. It's called Vocal Projection.

Most importantly, you will start to experience what speaking loudly feels like in your body. With practice, it will get in your muscle memory and become second nature.

Don't worry! Once you've started to experience the freedom of speaking loudly, we can then modulate your volume for any situation that you find yourself in.

Have you ever given a speech and the reception was... lukewarm at best?

It happens. The question is why, and what can you do about it.

One common habit is rushing. Most people tend to rush when they're nervous. So right before your talk, find a private place to run in place before you start. This can energize and relax you at the same time.

And, remember to breathe — and when I say breathe, remember that exhalation is the key! This will really help you to slow down.

Another common mistake is thinking that speaking in a lower tone, and specifically at the ends of sentences sounds more official. It does not. Also, at the ends of sentences, try speaking on the same pitch or go slightly higher in pitch.

Have you ever been told that you're better off mouthing the words? Just let the others sing?

Comments like these can be hurtful and can have lasting effects.

When I hear stories like this, it makes me feel so sad.

Is there a lack of ear training and vocal technique? Yes. But that can be learned.

Newsflash: There's no such thing as tone deafness!

Here's a simple technique — I play a note on the piano or sing it. I then ask my student not to rush, really listen, take a beat, then sing the note.

In a private session, we can spend a dedicated amount of time on it. Before you know it, you'll be singing on pitch!

Have you been told that you speak in a monotone, or that you swallow the ends of your sentences?

People often speak with very little pitch variation, mistakenly thinking that this sounds business-like.

This runs the risk of sounding boring, and losing your audience’s attention.

Here's a way to prevent that.

Have some fun! In the privacy of your home, practice singing your words. Speaking with wild pitches — jumping from low notes to high notes, back to low notes - mix it up!

If you're brave enough, record yourself so that you can hear the difference.

How do you connect with someone you’ve just met?

Once, I asked myself, “How would I like to feel at the end of this meeting?” I wanted to feel a strong connection, that we had something in common. I wanted to walk away feeling how much I loved that meeting.

As I was thinking this, I noticed the person had a very slight accent, from a region in Europe where I have many dear friends. So I mentioned the region. Turns out, I was right, and that was the turning point that shifted the whole tone of the meeting.

How might you apply this to situations in your own life?

To keep from running out of air, avoid chest breathing.

When you breathe in, don’t raise your chest. Practice deep abdominal breathing. Imagine filling up your stomach with air. And don’t forget to breathe out — relaxation is in the exhalation!

We are wind instruments. A free flow of air will help you produce resonant tones.

When you are speaking, if you get nervous, do you tend to rush? Pretend that you are speaking to a child. Take the time to make sure they really understand every word. A fringe benefit is that you will naturally add more pitches, which makes you much more interesting vocally!

If these tips are resonating with you and you'd like to explore your vocal potential further, respond with a yes and we'll set aside some time for a complimentary vocal discovery session. So much can happen in this concentrated time frame.
