As an artist/organizer, Michael Reyes performs internationally and facilitates educational workshops on the topic of merging creative expression and critical thought. His mission is to provide a participatory educational environment through poetry and hip-hop to address issues of social justice and cultural identity. Reyes’s background as a field worker in Michigan and a community activist in both Chicago and New York has added multiple layers to his Chican@/Latino identity. His work has been featured on HBO, Latin Nation, PBS documentary Dream Makers, Chicago Public Radio, National Public Radio, Pacifica and WBAI. He has performed at 1,500 institutions including: United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, National Council of La Raza, Conference, National Conference on Race and Ethnicity, Latino Ivy League Conference and the NAACP. He has worked with Dr. Cornell West, Lolita Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Oliver Stone, John Leguizamo, and Kanye West.

This past weekend we did another BackwoodsAndBonfires, and I can’t express how grateful I am to be able to co-create in so many spaces across our beautiful Detroit.

If you look at my network, the folks I create with across multiple genres and experiences curate 5–10 events every week. From Now Or Never to CrowdFreak, and from Fiesta Vibes to W.A.C.C, we are working hard to elevate our city. Add in THE R!OT and collectives like A Big A** Party, HOMIE HANGZ, Sick Em Records, Medium Creative Group, tulum.detroit Ⓜ️enace Ⓜ️edia the list can go on and on.

Collaboration is the key. With collaboration, you have to be willing to give of yourself, adapt to others’ ideas,many of which will be better than your own and find ways to apply them to your vision.

I’m feeling a bit reflective because, after years of work, W.A.C.C will be producing a festival that truly focuses on our collaborative vision. I can’t wait to roll out the lineups, stages, and experiences. For Audio Jack Music Fest.

I hope to continue growing, creating, and developing my work in the city I love.

May was one of the most busy months of work from Cinco de Mayo to Movment contracts from to and from to our team x stays working. In the midst of that I was in editing for two films I am directing for projects tied to

Outside of my nonprofit and poetry work I am brought in by brands to curate and design experiences from curating events to designing physical space. Creative Director, Curator or whatever the title calls for. Anyone out there that knows the quote “a jack of all trades but a master of some and a master of some is is better than a master of none”

Another amazing build! One of my roles is serving as creative director for many projects, but this is the team that truly brought it to life. I always want to make sure we acknowledge the artist .makesart for the incredible work she did on this build, alongside (and cousin).

After 15 events across the city for our Cinco de Mayo series Fiesta Detroit, I want to invite you to our closing party this Saturday . Downtown space is so important, and to be able to fill it with our culture multiple times a year is key to the livelihood of our city.

We started Fiesta House because we knew there was a need to fill all our favorite venues with our community in an authentic way, while still maintaining programming in our neighborhood. Having said that, I want to thank for really advocating for us to be in the room.

Our events are a whole vibe for sure, but our mission is focused on creating beautiful and quality experiences for our people and a healthy environment for the folx that work alongside of us in creating experiences for our city.

Took my Dad to Game 7 suite experience!

A huge thank you to the organization. Never would I have imagined I would be taking my dad to a GAME 7.

Sports was a key time that brought us together, and basketball was a daily ritual. Even after long days of work, my dad would jump in and play.

Our backyard was a small slab of cement, and half of it was dirt. We played so much that the dirt was pounded into a solid square.

I played against and along with a few future NBA players growing up in Saginaw, that’s a pretty common thing. Me and my dad watched the Bad Boys of the 90s, the 2004 champs, and endless almost seasons.

To be able to take my dad to a suite experience and show him the world that I get access to from time to time, and do it for a Game 7 with our favorite team, is beyond words.

This is the type of organization I want to support!

Thank you and for an evening that will be a memory for me and my dad for the rest of our lives.
