In Memoriam: Charles Biasiny-Rivera
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Charles Biasiny-Rivera, Director Emeritus of En Foco, who left us on August 10, 2024. Charles was a visionary and an unwavering advocate for the arts, dedicating his life to fostering diversity and supporting emerging artists.
As one of the founders of En Foco, Charles played a pivotal role in nurturing and showcasing the work of countless artists, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. His passion for photography and commitment to elevating underrepresented voices have inspired many and will continue to influence the art world.
Charles was a respected leader and a cherished mentor, friend, and family member. His legacy of kindness, creativity, and dedication will live on through the countless lives he touched and the vibrant community he helped build.
A memorial service celebrating the remarkable life and contributions of Charles Biasiny-Rivera will take place on August 31, 2024, at Keyser Carr Funeral Home in Kingston, NY. Alex Bershaw is a portrait and documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. Skyline captures unleash the provocative side of timeless landmarks. His portraits evoke movie stills, frames of a story that came before and continues on. Looking at Alex's work, the viewer is treated to a hint of the long shadow cast by fleeting moments, a glimpse of the unexpected. Tapped into the living and breathing culture that informs each scene, one wonders not so much what’s in these images as what’s behind them.

Alex recently finished a two-year portrait project for the forthcoming book "Riverside Park: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. Alex Bershaw’s photography has been featured at Voyage LA Magazine, Hudson Museum (digital), Urban Folk Art Gallery, Re-Inspire, Goorin Bros. Hats, Rolling Stone, DIS Micro Gallery, Joyce Gordon Gallery (Oakland), Tibet House (NYC), Wonder Wheel Records, Maya Records, MOB Journal, Late Fee Magazine, Elegant Magazine.

Exhibition on view now! En Foco presents Wildstyle: Iconic Fashion From Gen-X to Gen-Z, an exhibition hosted virtually illustrating the powerful influence of Hip Hop culture and all its expressive forms. Featured artists include Anthony Artis, Alex Bershaw, Koren Martin, Jamel Shabazz, Coreen Simpson, and Hidemi Tagaki. Curated by Tarisse Iriarte, and Kay Hickman.

“Wildstyle” was pioneered by the Mcs, B-boys/B-girls, DJs, and innovators to create a distinctive blueprint of innovative fashion and sentiments of liberation. From Members Only leather jackets coupled with doorknocker earrings, to the flyest hairdos and fresh cuts to Starter jackets, suede Pumas, African Medallions, Kangols, and Adidas tracksuits, to an era of colorful wigs, Girbaud jeans and crop tops with logo tees and Yankee fitted caps… In the early 2000s, we were introduced to shiny suits coupled with uptowns. Hip-hop’s exemplary swag and culture generated global phenomena. The selected works in this exhibition exemplify this artistic expression through a series of photographic images and media. This virtual exhibition and program will serve as an ode to the retrospective of Hip Hop’s flavorful ingenuity that has transcended the ages from Gen-X to Gen-Z.

"The works in Divine Queerness are sprinkled throughout the second and third floors of the community center, interwoven into the space in a way that feels akin to a treasure hunt. The photographs are displayed against the backdrop of offices, bathrooms, and the echoing chatter of staff and visitors. The Center, founded in 1983 as a resource hub for LGBTQ+ community members, is already full of artworks and historical memorabilia — from Keith Haring’s “Once Upon A Time” (1989) site-specific bathroom mural to David LaChapelle’s larger-than-life Humankind (1989) collages to Gran Fury’s crimson “RIOT” painting from 1988. Mixed amongst them, the works selected for Divine Queerness appear to be in communication with these permanent displays, activating a unique viewing experience."

The exhibition features artists Amarise Carrera, Debmalya Ray Choudhuri, Benjamin Eichert, Lola Flash, Dauris Martinez, Gabriel Garcia Roman, and Giancarlo Montes Santangelo. Curated by Gabriel G. Torres.

Divine Queerness: Forms and Tools Methods of Healing at The Center is now on view in-person, and virtually until September 24, 2023.
