a brush with violence | performance | 2017
This piece explores anger as a state to be entered, observed, and gradually understood rather than simply expressed. Through sustained attention and repetition, the artist engages with the emotion from within, allowing it to unfold and reveal its textures and limits. In doing so, the work suggests that by fully confronting and exploring anger, it can be disarmed—transformed from an overwhelming force into something visible, contained, and less dominant.
The moment of destruction does not function purely as catharsis, but as part of this ongoing inquiry. While it appears as a release, it remains embedded within a controlled process, questioning whether such expressions truly resolve anger or merely externalize it.
The reversed sequence further complicates this idea. By undoing the destruction, the work introduces the illusion of reversal—of being able to take back action and emotion. This gesture destabilizes the notion of catharsis, suggesting that while anger can be enacted and even aesthetically “resolved,” its presence cannot simply be erased. Instead, the piece leaves anger suspended between expression and containment, emphasizing exploration over conclusion.
