Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6 — beginning on the birthday of author Dr. Seuss. This week is a part of NEA’s larger program, which focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.

Today is Dominican Independence Day — celebrating the Dominican Republic’s independence from Haiti in 1844. One of our Signature Titles, “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” by Junot Díaz, explores what it means to be a Dominican man through the lens of the fear and violence that resulted from Trujillo’s 30+ years dictatorship of the Domincan Republic. We encourage you to read this story that explores brotherhood, love, and family.

Actor Jasmine Vang spent last week in Miami, bringing “The Latehomecomer” to life in four schools, reaching over 585 students! This was made possible by our partnership with The Miami Theater Center. We want to thank MTC for bringing us back again and creating such a wonderful experience.

One week from today we’ll be at Paterson Free Public Library for our first “Books Unite” Book Club! We’ll be discussing “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” by Erika L. Sánchez . We hope you join us for a thoughtful discussion of this important story.

If you can’t join us on Monday, we hope you come to the live performance on March 5 and/or workshop on March 12! All events are free and open to the public — no registration required.

“The Latehomecomer” is in Miami this week! Actor Jasmine Vang will be bringing this story to life for students in partnership with The Miami Theater Center.

This adaptation tells a universal story of immigration, through the specific lens of this ancient culture inextricably bound to the history of the war in Vietnam. We are grateful to work with MTC again on their important educational programming.
