COMING UP at L’Alliance New York: the New York premiere of Commedia dell’arte by Camille Henrot, co-presented by Performa

French-born, NYC-based Camille Henrot (Camille Henrot) is a contemporary visual artist known for her multidisciplinary practice spanning film, sculpture, drawing, painting, and large-scale installations. Commedia dell’arte is her first-ever live stage performance, co-commissioned by Performa, Aspen Art Museum/Wheeler Opera House, and LYRA Art Foundation, which premiered this summer at Aspen Art Museum’s AIR Festival.

Henrot’s performance incorporates the stock characters and comic ploys of the Italian Renaissance theatrical tradition within a modern-day New York City apartment building. The delivery of a package triggers a cascade of uncanny events among tenants, as the tragi-comedic play attempts to make sense out of the senseless, ultimately collapsing into it.

In collaboration with writers Estelle Hoy and Justine Gelfman, set designer Adam Charlap Hyman of Charlap, Hyman & Herrero, choreographer Sigrid Lauren, composers Mauro Hertig and Aaron David Ross, costume designer Sandra Berrebi, and many others, the piece swings between absurdity and sharp social commentary.

This special site-specific short performance brings together dancers Asha Thomas and Robert Cornejo in an intimate duet that offers a sensitive lecture on communication across generations. By placing these two artists at distinct, contrasting moments in their lives and careers, the choreography becomes a living conversation where maturity and youth meet.
